I chopped down the cherry tree…. Maybe should have waited until it wasn’t 1000 degrees and a holiday weekend with family en route but when you have an addiction common sense doesn’t apply.

Definitely should get a decent stash of wood out of that.

Maybe the en route family can lend a hand? ;)

That will make nice smoking wood and some future BTU'S. The heat is definitely on us.

Nice size for cherry. Did you have to take the fence down first?

No I didn’t. I probably should have honestly but decided not to. There was enough room in between strands. Not smart to limit my ability to move when felling a tree but I worked out. A do as I say not as o do moment.

February sounds delightful right now…. Spent about hours on it today. 10-15 minutes at a time and lots of water. It is 98 and a ton of humidity so can’t ply around with that heat.

Got it all cut and what I am splitting , split. I saved a bunch of longer straight pieces for my mom , she likes to make stuff out of straight wood. Will let her pick through it before I cut them up. Was a decent load of wood , split nice and smelled nice to boot.

Fwiw, and done with the recent Hickory score, I'm not splitting rounds less than 4"or 5" diameter. It all goes into a stack that simply won't be used for 3 or 4 years.

I've split too much small stuff, and tossed too much of it, not wanting to split it.
But, I couldn't bear to toss away good Hickory bits.
And now I keep a little more of what I cut.

Looks like a nice pile of wood for the stove etc. Where does this put your overall hoard of wood?

I hear you on the hickory, I split a truck bed full a few weeks ago , I try and save as much of that as I can. Same with Pecan. Honestly I try and utilize as much of a tree as I can. I save saw dust and noodles and a portion of the twigs even for different things. I have probably 5 years worth of wood split and stacked currently. I have one more HUGE oak on the property to fell but will wait until mowing season is over as it will go in the front yard when she falls. Other than that I have no foreseeable trees but we have a decent amount of land and there are always trees that need to be removed, just a matter of getting in the woods and finding them

Agreed ^^^. Now that I'm 4+ years ahead, I don't split rounds smaller than about 6".

Yeah , heat index of 104 yesterday so lots of breaks. I moved my area I split next to our little pond under some shade trees, had a breeze yesterday across the pond so the splitting wasn’t bad , loading it in the sun sucked but took lots of breaks and kept at it.
