Edit- i found out they are called slide pins.

I have a Honda civic, maybe 2009? 130k. A FedEx truck backed into a rural highway and I had to slam on my breaks at 55 mph. The front right break locked up. I got it home, opened up the breaks and they look ok. Greased up the contact points but, the bottom slide pin on the caliper is stuck. I am not sure if the rubber is stuck in there or what. I hit it with a mallet and screw driver, worked on it with some vise grips, wd-40... still stuck. Any ideas to loosen this up?

Lol. No wonder it was stuck. The torch worked great.

You guys were out chopping wood I guess.

So I am stuck with a rusty caliper pin. I will hit up the parts store in the morning. You think I need a new caliper or will a new pin do the job?

someone didn't lube the slide pins with caliper grease as required when doing the last brake job.

A bench grinder with a wire wheel will clean that right up...if you have one, or access to one....just make sure the boot/seal is still good...and grease it up good this time.

brakes are nothing to fool with. with todays pricing I would replace it all.
    RockAuto 200 bucks
    rotors, calipers, slides and pads
you know the other side is as bad or worse.

Yeah, boot is toast. I have the tools though. I will see what they have to repair or replace at my local parts shop. I need some break cleaner anyhow.

I looked into it and I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were across the board. You are right, better safe than sorry.

For anybody in the future, be careful where the slide pin is pointed if you heat up the bracket to get it out. I have seen the grease boil and build up enough pressure to shoot the pin out like a rocket. Dude lost part of his hand. It is an effective way to get the pin out.

oh and do not use anitsieze on the pins!!! Ever!!!

Did they change the formula for anti-seize in the last three or four years? I’ve used it for about 35 years because it lasts longer than grease

From my experience anitsieze drys out and hardens up. Causing the pins to jamb.

Is there a high temperature silicon? I saw someone talking about a synthetic lubricant on a Honda forum.

My experience has been the opposite. I got about twice as long out of the anti seize as I did the grease. I actually clean the grease out of new or rebuilt calipers and replace it with anti seize
