Shagbark hickory and black locust in the same score. :dancer: Actually a follow up to a score i worked last Spring. Leaves popped and so did overgrowth so i put it on hold. Only three minutes to my wood storage.
BL and SBH blown over from a May 2018 tornado here. Lots of BL chunks on the ground from the storm clean up at the time. Shag blowover still attached to rootball. A few BL spars. Im guessing two cords yet to get. Pulled a good PU load today. Another BL had blown over since the spring which was most of today's load. Had to hack through major tangle to get it bucked and out. 194 was great for that!
Recent blowover clean up. IMG_4255.JPG Shagbark. Has to be 24" DBH. It had some leaves last year so meat should be good. IMG_4259.JPG
Today fresh BL trunk before. IMG_4256.JPG
After i hacked my way to the rootball. 15" DBH IMG_4261.JPG
Rusty old fence i almost hit with the 194 and 500i. IMG_4260.JPG
More random images of whats there. IMG_4257.JPG IMG_4263.JPG IMG_4264.JPG IMG_4265.JPG IMG_4267.JPG Critter living in the hollow wasnt there when i cut his home in half! IMG_4269.JPG

It's feeling a bit stuffy in here just looking at all those potential BTUs :) Is that the same spot as your "persistence pays off" thread?

That's a winner spot in my book! Locust, black cherry and shagbark... Nice to hit it before the heat sets in too.

The thing that really surprised me is the chunk of SBH laying there was still good for the most part. The end touching the ground was shot for a few inches, but rest of log good.

Cutting SBH at dusk can show the occasional spark. Primo btu's! And if you haven't already, hitting barbed wire completely frenches up your chain!

Black locust bark is good kindling too. Not the best on its own, but adds to what you already put in the stove pretty nice. I'm still waiting for the day when I score some SBH, Ive only had a few loads of bitternut hickory in 10 years. My chopping block beside the stove is from 10 years ago

Great score. I've never personally seen either of those trees. I'm always amazed by all of the thick brush and vines that grow out where you are. We don't have any of that out here. That stuff looks like a PITA.

Black locust has a weird smell, kinda like a cross between cigar smoke and turmeric

It seems to be attracted to Black Locust. Whenever you see a forest of tangles, slow down. There’s usually a locust patch in there somewhere :).

Nice score Brad. And that is a tangly one but that’s the mania.

Nice score Brad. There’s almost always a thicket under a BL grove. The leaves are small and don’t block all the sun out which lets a lot of scrubby stuff grow.

Best to get that mess out of there before spring, for sure! Every season has its own challenges for the wood hoarder.

That definitely is one of the big differences between east and west.

When the trees blew over it exposed the forest floor which explodes with growth as the sunlight hits it.

Good point. They also seen to grow where the sun reaches them...edge of highways, train tracks, abandoned lots etc. Once they get choked of sun they seem to die.
