Well I am done. We moved into our home in November, decided we would put a wood burner in for this coming winter and I got busy with firewood. I had 3.5 cords of split ash delivered in January for $450 and got it stacked. I then scrounged another 4 cords of various hardwoods this spring. Then last week I had another 3.5 cords of split ash and hickory delivered for $450. I am not up to 11 cords stacked for $900. Getting 3 years ahead on my own seemed too daunting. I told myself I would scrounge what I anticipate to burn each winter to see if its sustainable, and I think it is. From here forward the goal will be to scrounge what I burn. I attached some pictures. I would like to thank everyone who helped along the way. I have spent hours upon hours on here reading.

I am having the Ideal Steel installed in the coming months and can honestly say this is the first winter I am excited for!! This past winter was spent in a 60 degree house with $480 electric bills. No bueno.

Liking your good news BS. You have this winter in the palm of your hands. I'm close behind with an IS also on the way to my hearth. I'm looking forward to a few more degrees, longer burns and less wood used if all goes as planned. Post some pics of your install if you can

Well, you did get an awesome deal on the wood, and the fact that you scrounged a lot more despite seeming like a daunting task, is AWESOME. And you did it RIGHT! Your ahead, 3 years and you've only lived ther for 8 mos or so...... NICE WORK! Nice pics too! Looks like the wood will get plenty of sun and wind!:D

That's great Beet. Your story reminded me how excited I was getting the wood ready at our farm, when we first moved there in 1994. It's a good feeling isn't it? Ya dun good...

Nice!!! Those stacks look awesome. Ought to get some serious drying going on. Good for you to get that far ahead before you even have your stove. You won't look back and grumble. Only :DAt how nice and comfy that house will be.

    Those stacks look great!

You have tons of wood already with a lot of sun and airflow. . That Ash should be good and dry for you this year. That's an awesome price on the Ash and hickory too. :)

great job! thats a really good price for C/S/D too! especially for the ash in the middle of heating season. would be $180-$200/cord here.

Bet that feels great. Best part is the three year plan is cheaper and more efficient.

Very cool! Nothing wrong with buying wood at all BS that's how lots of folks do it.. I have gotten very far ahead but it's cost me a lot of time I could use for other stuff to CSS. Buying allows time for other stuff and in most casses is far cheaper than gas even with buying the wood.

So true Pete. Our first 3 cords of maple and oak... we had dropped here in a pile cut and split last fall. It hurt just a little payin for wood ;) ...but we had no choice either as we just moved here and had a woodshed to build. Hoping it'll be dry enough this winter. We'll see.

Nothing wrong with buying wood. If you value your time and factor in equipment costs you most undoubtedly will find that it is cheaper to buy wood that is processed. (And those of us that have gas probably could do it cheaper with that). But heating with wood isn't a business, it is part hobby and part lifestyle.

Nice work, if I ever move I'd have a hard time parting with my wood pile. It takes a lot of work to get 3+ years ahead, and I'm not quite there yet.

I've only been burning for 5 or 6 years? and if I had known then what I know now, I would have done exactly what you did. Also, you did it at a very reasonable price. Enjoy the warmth come winter.
