I have been cutting boards for my shop a variety of widths but now have some really big logs to work up with my bandsaw. The cant I have ready to start slicing up is 14”x14”. Think I can get away with 14” wide boards or is that too wide? The wood is ponderosa pine.
The only problem I see is the varying widths. With batons, that would really catch my eye, and to me, look like a mistake. On the other hand, sawing a 14" board in half would bother me too.
So far splitting has not been a big issue but cupping is not unusual especially put up green. When dried not so bad to cup.
If your shed walls are open on the inside the cupping effect should be diminished somewhat as the board will more evenly dry. The sun will still have an effect Maybe hang a large tarp off the sunny side with space for air?
I did one of my barns with a ship lap and purposely alternated 10” and 12”. I agree with fuelrod that battens would make the differences very obvious, and likely not in a good way.
Do you have time to stick it up and let it dry a bit? You might be done with this project now as its been a couple of weeks. Looks like a fun one.
I have almost enough boards cut to finish the job stacked, stickered, and drying. We got dumped on Sunday night with 30 to 36 inches of snow so my board making and board installation has been put on hold. It doesn't take them very long to get manageable/dry being the logs were 2 years old and went thru a hot forest fire. If it doesn't warm up enough to melt some of this I may be waiting until spring to finish up. Thanks for the post.
