Just getting started here, first on the prairie and now in the woods as the leaves start to come down. Who else is out looking for birds with their dogs?
Great pics and looks like a spectacular way to spend the day. The son and I are heading to the camp tomorrow for a little grouse hunting but no dogs.
Pretty country and some awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing. I'll be getting after some ducks starting this weekend and upland birds in November.
Hey guys. I just got back from grouse hunting with our boys, my cousin and his son and daughter, my brother and his boys. It was a nice time and a lot warmer than usual for October. Driving into a cutting to find a tote road to walk. Heading in.. One our oldest bagged. Our other boy got another one of them. Nice red phase bird. Their old man does some clean up from time to time. They have gotten really good so I don’t shoot all that many anymore, which suits me just fine. Roasted grouse in garlic and butter, served over wild rice with a Caesar salad.
Speaking of dogs. We had a great hunting dog who died when the boys were just starting hunting (Chesapeake/lab/and some other breed). She was given to us, and came from a long line of Indian Reservation dogs. When she died, we got a black lab, but she ended up having health issues that prevented her from hunting, and she has now passed on as well. We still do just fine for grouse without a dog, but don’t pheasant hunt without going with friends or family with dogs. Here she is. The top picture was her ever vigilant out ice fishing after running behind me on the snow machine about 5 miles in. It was well below zero that morning. The bottom picture is her with my wife after a hunt in 1989. It is hard to see but there is a pile of 5 birds on the rocks at the but of the gun.
Looks like a fun time and great meal hovlandhomestead! That's a lot of meat in that pan, yall must have gotten quite a few birds, or there's a lot more meat on them than I realize....I've never had grouse before.
Got in another hunt yesterday. My wife and I walked out the door and about 1 mile down an old logging road, northwest through the woods another mile or two, and then looped back down to the old road for a 2 mile walk back. View across a river valley First bird. Got another one a little ways later on. The gun is new to me and it was my first time carrying it. It was gifted to me by my hunting buddy. It was his mother’s who just passed away. We all hunted together in high school, and she wanted me to have it. It is a Winchester model 101 in 20 gauge.
Great pictures everyone. Some beautiful country there, good times with the dogs is always a good thing. The question is who has more fun? You or the dogs.
