Starting this thread to share pics of milling my friends walnut tree. Removal was here: Walnut removal
We’ve been hoping to get it done in the evenings this coming Mon-Wed so I tried to clear my work schedule and since the weather is looking very promising, I took vaca Tues and Weds.
    Here’s where I left it:

Will be cut into 2 sections and probably 2 - 2.25” thick. I’ll keep 1 or 2 slabs, rest is his. More to come.

Gonna make some nice slabs. Hopefully the heart is good. Never know until its sliced open. Do you get dibs on the slabs you want? How are you hauling a 18'+ slab home?

So the good news is we hit no metal. :dex:

16 slabs total. 1st and largest log was cut to 2 1/8, the other log was about 1 5/8.

This was my one and only take home.

I also cut the stump as low as possible for them.

So the back story on the milling bag. That Husky pouch was an extra at one of the shops I work at so I was allowed to take it. Decided to fill it with all stuff needed to mill. 2 spare chains, wedges, tape measure file or two etc. 4 cuts in and I need to change a chain. Can’t for the life of me find the plastic bag that my long loops were in. I actually ran home to look for them. Could t find em so I brought the grinder back thinking I’d just finish w one loop.

2 hours later I get back and remember I got this new fancy bag. :headbang:

So I was able to utilize all 3. They roached now. I’ll soak and tooth brush em.

How long did the whole milling process take and how many tanks of gas. That looks tiring for sure and smart move bringing your own shade. The sun knocks me out!

Field filing job of my depth gauges wasn’t precise. I like doing that on the bench. This was a loop I ground on site so I had to kiss the rakers a little.

I went through about 3 gallons of mix. Middle of the large piece was a tank a cut, because the chain wasn’t optimal. I got there at about 9 but we had to wrestle the two pieces apart. It was comical but we got it done. Then 2-2.5 hour lunch break for the chain fiasco and I got home at 6:30.

Great video. Looks like that saw makes easy, but tedious work of it.

3 gallons...holy crap! Well its a big cc saw at full throttle so it makes sense. Do you rest the saw after each cutting or gas up and continue?

Yep, 94cc that is ported so it has a drinking problem, lol. After each cut I let the saw sit idle while we remove the slab. Then gas/oil her back up, a little fast idle to soak the chain in oil and away we go. I do always let it sit idle for a good bit before shutting it off, to let the flywheel cool things down a bit.
Those 2" slabs are massively heavy. I just transferred it to my WheelHorse wagon. I'm definitely going to need help to get it in its final resting place to dry.

Whatcha gonna make out of it? Gorgeous piece of stock.

We have one small BW log at buzz-saws to mill yet. Probably mill to 7/8". The pile of mill logs grows fast with me around!
We still kick ourselves for not thinking of CSM a couple of the big BW logs i scored back in January. He has a couple saws set up for it. It couldve been skidded into the back neighbors yard as it was flat and access to the logs.

No idea. I have so much milled wood here you'd think I'm a hoarder or something. :picard:

Tell me about it! LOL!!! :picard:

A pair of my work sawhorses and a 28' extension ladder have been commandeered as a makeshift drying rack for all the long cedar we milled last time. One room in the lower level has boards stickered...mostly cedar with the one mulberry log. Just realized another pair of horses has sassafras stickered and stacked on them. What sucks is i need a pair for work tomorrow! The BL is stickered next to the deck. Ive only used one cull (milled uneven) BL board to fix my wheelbarrow. I guess the only good thing i could say is the boards are shorter and thinner so easier to "store".

Neat! Big, clean slab. Tree was a fast grower, wide rings and wide sap wood. Amazing that you didn't find any metal in a yard walnut. That's a major win.
