I want to make a griddle for my washing machine drum firepit to take camping. My cousin can burn anything out on his table at work but I don't know if I should get some stainless or something else. Cast iron is obviously the best but I don't know if I can find a piece or if it would be a gazillion dollars.

I'm inspired by this rig but it is $1,200 retail. I'm wanting to spend a 30 pack of Busch light and maybe a hundred in steel.

Cast iron is actually not the best. What you want is the thickest piece of carbon steel you are willing to carry. Unfortunately the stuff gets heavy fast.

1/4" 46100 armor. Used in military vehicles. Extremely high carbon and harder than the hinges of hell... not easy to come by but I have a source.

Yeah, I'd just use a piece of regular ole carbon steel...it will last long enough that its not worth spending the money on stainless

For clarification I'm talking about a flat top for cooking eggs and stuff. Not grilling.

Looks awesome, but not what I'm after

I've made several out of mild steel, just grind the mill scale off and season as you would cast.

You can fix that with a few days of spare time and a grinder.
