Well, pretty sure it's beech.... This tree had a split in it for a few years. A year or two ago, it died. Thursday night, some pretty good storms rolled through SoVT. I checked my webcams the next AM and saw a tree had fallen. Sweet, weekend plans before the weekend. A few pics of what I dealt with. It split in a few spots and there was about 8' still standing. A pretty easy job to clean up. The ol' MS250 had no issues. All split! Currently stacked and seasoning in the sun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nice grab Skier76 , I saw on one of the local news stations in Vermont that certain areas were hit pretty hard.
Thanks! There were quite a few twigs and branches that needed to be picked up before mowing the lawn. Must have been windy when the storm rolled through. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looks like you got it just in time as most of it still looks fairly solid. We had a bunch of beech die off here and it got soft real quick, but I think it was struggling and getting soft for quite a while. I cut up some of it that looked and cut like it might be marginal but a year later a screwdriver sunk into it rather readily. Between 1/8 and 1/4 cord so no big waste of time. We have beech here but I've never burned any that I know of. My parents have a multi-stem one in their back yard and it had beech nuts one year. Bazillions of them. Dad said it had never had nuts before. I haven't noticed any on it since.
There are quite a few Beech in the woods behind the house. They dint seem to last that long. The one that fell was about the size most of them are before they just die. Not sure what causes them to die off suddenly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Beech bark disease - Wikipedia I have about half the beech trees in my woods affected. The rest stay healthy unless they are wounded somehow, which may be as simple as a windstorm taking off a branch. The nice thing about beech is that it is excellent firewood.
When they go bad they don't last too long usually. A huge part of Michigan's beech got wiped out from the bark disease. Tough to see those beautiful trees go.
Thanks guys. Noticed some growth on the bark of another three that died last time I was up there. What a shame.
Nice looking stack and the split have a straighter grain than the beech I just worked up. Got through the log with my MS250, but it work the saw hard. Even with a new chain. My log was 16" dia.
Beech should have a fairly smooth bark. If you start to see some cankers or other problems with the bark, cut it. It seem's to degrade quickly and by the time it falls is's just not worth the time to burn it. It's wonderful firewood when in good shape.
