Heres two questions ? I think i might have asked this but i cant find it, im not sure though. Is barkless (ASH) wood worth more? Is BBQ wood worth more? Thanks, any input will be much appreciated. Cherry is at bottom of pic.
Is barkless wood worth more ? well it certainly is/can be to those who believe it is. Premium, artisanal and gluten-free is even better. How good are your marketing skills and how gullible impressionable are your customers ? Is BBQ wood worth more ? More than what ? Firewood ? Given that it is usually used in much smaller quantities almost a spice component, yeah-duh. But how much of a BBQ market are you exposed to ?
Theres quite a few BBQ places in the area, iv never went after it. I do have a ton of shagbark hickory on my property that im taking down. I just want to be fair to myself and the customers. I never expected this little side work of mine to take off like this. I figured i ask some of you guys for advice before i lose money or take advantage of a future customer.
Never heard of anyone using ash for smoking. Now barkless might appeal to the occasional burner because it is cleaner. As far as the hickory for bbq joints all you can do is ask if they are interested in using local sourced wood. Good for their business and yours. I have heard/read some may want to know about things like bar oil used etc. Other wood for smoking include mulberry ,cherry and oak. EDIT. Don't forget about selling holiday wood. Cherry is good from before thanksgiving thru Christmas for good smelling holiday fires.
Yes you can get a bit more for the bbq/smoking wood. I have a few customers that want bark less hickory, oak, pecan and cherry, I charge extra for the time to clean it up, some don't mind it though.
Thank you very much, i just meant the hickory and cherry for the bbq and the ash i was just inquiring about selling some as barkless. Thanks again for responding
Thanks for the feedback bud, do you have a favorite way to remove the bark? Hatchet, chisel, drawknife are a couple i would try i guess
I use the blade on the splitter, especially if the logs have sit a little while. Not fresh green logs
I smoke with chips in an electric smoker but when guys do wood smokers, do they want low moisture seasoned wood
I would say yes... This company sells some items for a lot more.....including chunks, unsplit rounds, cherry, hickory etc... Hickory Firewood Box - Cutting Edge Firewood
Some do, some it doesn't matter. Really depends on the person and the smoker. At least part seasoned would be best IMO.
I sold a few bundles of cherry to a customer who bought them for a friends smoker/grill. Tried them on CL with no luck. Big box stores sell bags of smoking chips. Any big BBQ restaurants in your area? Try them???
Midwinter has me spoiled on barkless wood. I've been burning the oak I got from her, and theres almost no ash in the stove, or mess beside it without bark in the mix.
Send it to me. I'll archive it for you. Will send pics occasionally . You can't come visit it though.
