Now I know it is not stove related.... THe company that makes our stoves also makes pivots. Which is why we started selling pivots as we have 8 pivots on our farm anyway. I like selling stoves as I get to move around the countryside. The pivot are a whole different ball park as they can be anywhere which is real interesting. I won't go 1,000 miles for a stove but I will for a pivot! So the wife and I are just back from "overseas" flogging a couple in Tassy. The terrain is mental so it will be a real challenging install in a couple of months especially if the weather turns before we get there, but hey ya gotta give it a go. The gear will arrive and then an engineer will fly out from China and I think we will finish in 2-3 weeks. Fun is not the right word but it certainly helps burn off the excess meatpies between jobs. Have 2 more arriving in about 3 weeks but they are largely self building which relieves the strain and I am expecting that in the next couple of weeks I will need to head up to the Northern Territory (where we have 1 at the moment) for a few more. That is only 2500 miles away! We are a tiny operation taking on the might of some massive US Corporations. THey see us as a real cancer as they have monopolized the industry so their prices are double ours! So now they need to at least look slightly competitive to keep us out. I take great joy in thinking that eventhough we don't get that many sales we are forcing the rip off US Corporations to slash their mega profits. Every now and then we get a farmer who is brave enough to say " F## the status quo I will give you a go" and we are in. The big guys hate it, they are desperate for farmers to not realise we are selling the same equipment for 1/2 the price. Anyway here are a few pics from bewdiful Tassy. THere is one from the farm trying to show the slope but it doesnt really show it. Great looking spot regardless. Can't seem to get rid of the double up pics sorry....
Sometimes I realize that we're from different continents and separated by a common language. 1 pivot play noun piv·ot \ˈpi-vət\ Popularity: Top 20% of words Simple Definition of pivot : a pin or shaft on which a mechanical part turns : the action of turning around a point : the action of pivoting : a person or thing that is central or important to someone or something else So since this is on a farm it could be a varmint known to pivot on his long tail, hay mowing equipment or water. I assume it's irrigation oriented? The pictures look great and if I ever find my way over to that side of the world I would love to see some of those sites!
I think it's like a chair lift to climb hills or cross trenches... Most of Tasmania would not need irrigation as it weather is much like British Isles or Seattle when it's not raining there's fog... sunlight is more rare. Tasmania would be close to Washington state for weather and northern territory like Texas
No it is pivot irrigators, and no Tasmania is full of pivot irrigators as they have such a amazing amount of water. Definitely the highest concentration of pivots in Australia. Below is a couple we finished a month ago. You can just make out the 2nd in the background.
see I learned something too.. I spent to weeks back packing in Tas. rained every day on the fruit blocks in Victoria they used drip irrigation as the earth was so salty the pivot types caused salt to rise to top and kill plants.. I think the murray? river was salter than the ocean..
Global warming has changed all that my friend. Salinity is also less of a problem in Victoria as lower rainfall lowers the water table and therefore salt levels. It is the ground water that is salty, the rivers are fine.
