Post up your pics , try to give a description or details because it may help someone id an axe that they have . Here's a 8lb Fiskars Isocore , a 2$ yardsale 5lb Norlund Maine wedge splitting axe and a no name picaroon I hafted the Norlund on a straight 36" hickory handle . I gave this 5lb Norlund to a friend , 10$ yardsale find , almost unused with original handle . I'll start with these , put up your pics !
Here's a Smart Manufacturing hewing axe that I bought from a local ad . Holds a good edge and carves very well .
Here's a 5$ axe head that I bought at a yardsale yesterday . 2 1/4 lbs Wetterlings on a 26" piece of hickory , all I have left to do is thin out the handle a bit and put the linseed oil to it .
I did put it on a15$ piece of hickory, I'll give you the same offer I gave another Southerner , you put 20$ of that funny monies in my hand while we're having a coffee and it might just be yours lol
Nice hewing axe and the wood scraper/spatula has nice lines to it. I need to keep an eye out for one this year.
You don't need a hewing ax to carve with , these were roughed out wit a Wetterlings hatchet . And here's a Swede hatchet that I rehandled and used it to rough out as well . The hewing one in the pic is unmarked , it's forgewelded with a high carbon steel cutting edge . I have more axes lol
I'd like a hewing axe for my tool collection. I have a lot of mid 1800's tools and one would look great on the wall.
The big one says chesterfield pa on it. I forget what else. The smaller one has some stamp that I can't make out. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Here's today's 5$ ax A little beat up on the poll but should clean up just fine , no id on this one but it was painted red .
It's hard to find good handles , we have a chain that sells Link handles , they had a sale on 36" , I went through two dozen to find 4 good ones . I went to use one on my latest find , no go because they are too small for the eye . No hickory up here but we have a couple of small local guys that make ash handles but the same deal , go through two dozen to find 4 good ones . We've got another hardware store , they have VB Swinger , only had 4 hatchet handles in stock but two were good . I do have an account with a distributor for Hultafors , their replacement are generally good but I do go there to pick I've gotten lucky and gotten at yardsales but only two so far .
I have a buddy who knows axes. I wanted a boys axe for my oldest birthday this week. My buddy suggested a couple and I bought this: I happened to call last night to ask where I sould buy a handle. He said he had just picked up a first run of a style his going to start selling. I chose a 20" for my kiddo. My buddy cleaned up the head, rehung on the new handle and put a shaving sharp edge on it. I almost can't wait to give it to him on Thursday.
