Not sure if we have a thread yet, but I’ll throw this one here. Two, three, four, five, six wheels or tracks! Let’s see some machine pics, fun times, repairs and oops’s. I’ve been riding mostly three and four wheelers since I was little. I’ve gotten back to it a bit more lately when we got an 86 Honda 125 for my son to start on. It needed some odds and ends and some new rubber. I recently picked up a Yamaha Big Bear for myself, it needs some odds and ends too.
Any fun trails near you guys that are good riding? Not looking for big mud or anything to hairy. Just a nice cruise with some decent scenery.
Tore into things yesterday. New front bearings and seals done. Found a ball joint with a bent stud so that’s on order. Opened up the clutch case. Got new secondary plate and springs coming along with primary springs. Got at the rear end this morning. Brakes, seals and bearings all the way across along with a new shock.
What was the issue there? Those typically have a VERY low failure rate. New bearings/seals in the diff too? Those typically have a high failure rate...people just don't drain the oil after goin swampin
Yep, got a few ATVs here. Oldest is a 91 Kawasaki bayou 300c that my buddy broke and still has not fixed( rear DS seal and bearings), a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500ho, and we have a nearly new 2019 Yamaha Kodiak 450 up at the cottage.
The springs in the primary seem a bit week and the plates in the secondary are a bit thin and had some of the clutch material melted near the outside edges. My guess is abuse and wrong oil being wet clutches. As far as the rear. The outer seals were chewed up and letting in more than they were keeping out. Luckily only the outer seals and bearings were bad. Everything internal was nice aside from the milky oil.
Based on engagement RPM? Or maybe "dragging" at idle? I have seen toasted frictions caused by a little kid riding the machine...too small to shift so they would ride around in second or third gear...which is VERY hard on the centrifugal clutch when taking off from a dead stop! Good way to burn the oil and plug the filter too! Caught it just in time then...lucky! That doesn't happen very often.
I’ve got a heavy thumb so I’m not thinking we will have anymore low rpm engagements. Broken axles and stripped gears? Mayyybe…
Well it’s alive!! Little snafu this morning. Got everything together but it would t move!! After a little thinking I pulled the side cover and looked at the clutch. I had replaced all the plates and managed to put the pressure plate on one slot off!!!! No grippy there! I moved it to the right spot lining up the tiny arrow and good to go!
Iirc you're in PA right? We used to go to Tower City and ride, well 2 or 3 times. It's a huge area but for some reason I remember that they started to tighten up the free for all there. Last trip there on of our group broke something in the first 20 minutes after a couple hour drive to get there.
Kinda like the last snowmobile trip we took...was supposed to be a 2 hour ride, ended up 4 hours because we drove right into a major snowstorm...then pulled in and got stuck in the parking lot...had to unhook the trailer to dig out. Once we thought we were ready to ride, turns out that the one dude had borrowed his ride from his buddy, and it was "just serviced" at the shop, 100% ready to ride...uh, nope. Had to tear the carbs off and try to roto-root the jets out with the few basic tools we had along...this thing hadn't run in at least a year!
