Ash timber prices climbing as beetle destruction looms ..."This summer, the price for ash timber in parts of New York hit a peak of $600 per 1,000 board feet, about triple what it was shortly after the beetles first arrived in the state in 2009, according to bi-annual stumpage reports issued by the state Department of Environmental Conservation."
Just saw this. I would think that timber owners will be selling to take advantage better prices and in turn should be lots of good ash firewood tops.
Does this bug also prey on black ash? When our land was logged a year ago, there was no market for black ash in Northern Minnesota. I have used it for heating for years and like it a lot. It also steams well for bending and forming things like toboggans. Our white ash in the Minneapolis area is starting to succumb to the beetles.
this doesn't make sense. if most all of the trees are dying then the market should already be flooded with ash. hence driving the price down. what am I missing?
Some of the lumber guys can correct me but I think the mills want green logs and not dead wood. After it starts to die it becomes discolored inside.
That's how it is here. The market is flooded with ash here. They won't even take it, which makes it great firewood.
