I was looking for Dutch ovens on CL for baking on top of our new IS stove and came across a really neat Dutch oven from Lodge that was made to be used on top of their Lodge Sportmans Grill. Anybody here have any experience with either of these items? The Lodge Sportsman's Grill seems to get good reviews. On further query, the owner said he has both the Dutch oven as well as the grill, and also one of these, a Camp Chef Ultimate Dutch Oven: I'm going to pick up all three.
Looks neat Brian! Never used one but It looks super if you were to go camping. Keep us posted, I like to here "anything" about cooking
We're mostly going to use this stuff on top of the new IS wood stove and in the back yard. We sold the pop up camper this summer because we have two in college as of this fall, so our camping days are over till the kids are outta college. I just brought home the loot. Owner was 67 but has heart failure so he just can't lift this stuff any more, and he and his wife are sizing down to move into an apartment. He was asking $89 for the oblong Lodge 3060 Dutch Oven/Fish Fryer with flat griddle iron lid and $50 for the Camp Chef Ultimate Dutch oven (the lid of which need scrubbed, sanded and re-seasoned). He had the Lodge Sportsman Grill and a Lodge Grid Iron 7612 griddle too, so I offered him $185 for everything you see here. He threw in the Camp Chef lid lifter too. I thought that was fair. The Lodge 3060 oblong Dutch ovens were discontinued in the 90s and the ones with the wildlife scene and flat griddle lid apparently catch a premium among collectors! Check out the prices on these Ebay auctions: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lod...er-W-RARE-FLAT-Griddle-Iron-Lid-/181039283385 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Dee...230?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f3c971636
It looks like it's in great shape Brian, I think you got a good deal! Now, looking forward to pics when the stove is in full swing.... Got any meal plans yet?
At least I have something to look forward to. I also sold my KLR650 to help with this year's tuitions so my wife said I could get another bike after the kids are outta college in 5 years. She likes the looks of the maroon and silver Goldwings.
Thanks! Actually I've been researching baking methods for on top of the stove. I want to bake home made bread and these Camp Chef Ultimate Dutch Ovens can do that well. They are also used for a whole meal with meat on the bottom round rack and veggies/taters on the top rack. I've read a lot of good reviews and recipes for them and the top burner on the IS should be perfect for a Dutch oven. Plus the oblong one should be good for roast chicken, small turkeys, stews, chile, etc.
I'm lucky in a way…., My Daughter is a junior, I have just enough put away and my GI bill help to get her all the way through school… "with that said" it's still been a $100,000 bill. If she decides to continue to grad school, it's on her and she knows it! I told her I would get her through the first 4 years, and with a "new car mind you", then her Mom and I were hitt'n the trail
Good stuff there Brian. The smokehouse should have some good pictures this fall with all that new gear.
Maiden voyage on the Lodge Sportsman Grill. Firing up some Hebrew National brand hot dogs here: This is a fun little grill, a good complement to our Weber charcoal grill.
I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to let you know Lodge makes exact copies of the original Atlanta Stove Works Sportsman Grill. When Atlanta Stove became Birmingham Stove and Range, they simply made the new door with their new name. Much nicer casting than the rough Lodge. Lodge still calls it the Sportsman and sells them with optional wildlife scenes on door. Here's the original oval fryer as pictured in BrianK post above; "Lodge waiting to steal your idea since 1896"
In defense of the Lodge family, Birmingham Stove & Range filed for bankruptcy in 1989, and their holdings were acquired by Lodge Manufacturing. I've been in the patent infringement mode too long. Let it go. Breathe. Let it go..........
Thanks Coaly! I'm still around sometimes, but not posting much. I had 4 strokes in March so most of my time has been occupied by a fairly long hard recovery. Not much chainsawing or CCS these days. (Well, not any.) Looks like I'll have to opt for a trike, like my brother TurboDiesel 's wife has, a CanAm Spider. My balance just won't let me get on two wheels again.
