I have a hard drive that won't boot in a computer. I have it hooked to USB adapter. When I click on the HD then Users it wont load and says I need to be admin but I can't get it to work. I am going to try test disk again but it seems like the HD quits working after I try to acess it. Any ideas on how to recover my files?

I always keep a linux distro available for such things. Using linux might be able to recover those files...

Have you tried logging in as administrator?

Otherwise, make a linux thumbdrive, I recommend Mint for windows users. Boot into that and it can probably access them.

    I've tried logging as admin.

I have a computer running Mint and the HD does not show up. I also tried running test disk on the Linux computer and the HD does not show up.

I had another harddrive a few months ago that I needed to recover. I tried everything on windows. Then I hook it up to the Linux computer and everything was there.

The hard drive shows up when I go into the bios.
