A lot of people think it is crazy but I have 3/4 of my basement that is what I call the griz cave. If you were blind folded before you come in you would think it was a 1800 log cabin but the thing people think is crazy is I keep at least 4 loads of wood at my stove until season is close to over and I stop bringing any in and just burn it. i worked hard on this room and have not had any bug / mold or any other problems people talk about just nice dry wood lsee than 4 steps from the stove. I do not bring it in until a couple of below 32 nights and have it gone by easter. Any body here do that ?

Mine will be close as far as storing a bit. Someone here posted a Bilco bin set-up (no stairs, rolling bin to catch firewood, roll into basement when full) and I'm hoping to have a couple made by snow. Will carry from the woodshed with the JD tractor bucket. Will be enough for a couple weeks. Looks good on paper.

Sounds simular to my supply I put on my covered porch for the burn season. Same level as my stove, 1st floor. Hardly 4 steps away, that does sound nice, wouldn't work in my situation. The ring wood holder at the stove will hold 1.5 days worth when full. I use a modified hand truck to roll the porch wood the the ring. It's a good system for me.

Have you chucked any splits thru the window Jack? It would be impossible for me to not send one thru it on the first throw...
Do you cover it when filling the box? Slick set-up tho... right beside the stove and you can keep the wood outside and out of the rain/snow...

I bring in whatever I plan to burn for the day/night. I use a Rubbermaid tote. I keep a weeks worth in the garage at a time, especially if storms are coming. I have had a few bugs come in, most notably powder post beetles that wake up and fly around before getting cremated.

Do you leave the load of wood on the handtruck until it goes in the stove? Wheels are good. I've been adding wheels under everything I have to move, if possible... a little at a time.

We stack the wood in the box and we never have had a problem.

I added on a separate room to the house just for a woodshed/furnace room. Inside holds 1.5 cord if stacked and attached shed holds almost 3 IIRC.
There is a pass through from shed to furnace room. First wood in is first out. There is also an exterior 2'x4' window for throwing wood in from a stack outside. I usually use the wood from outside stack first till the snow gets to deep then use the pass through to the shed avoiding the extra work of fighting the snow.
Never had a problem with insects, ever.

I have a box on wheels........it holds enough to load the stove for several days. I roll the box over to the back door, and load it up......

Thanks It works well and the temp stays around 80 where the wood is but I burn my first 6 loads out of a completely inclosed biildind that hold 6 loads and all of it is 3 plus year wood the day I put it in the building. This means bringing in wood every 2 or 3 days until the 6 loads are gone and its easy street after that. It also helps the 4 loads I put in fist to be in that temp for a couple of months before its time to burn it.

Good question. Yes, I preload the hand truck for the next time I plan on loading the firewood ring. And there are times when I'm going through a lot of wood I will fill the ring and leave the hand truck with a full load and take from that first. I also agree with you on wheels, I use em when I can, it helps a lot.

In my last house I kept about 2-3 days worth in the basement. But always had 1/3 cord in a bin inside the garage that was only 10 feet away from the house. The last year I was there I enclosed that area and connected the house and garage so after I didn't have to go outside I just kept all the wood in the garage. We had a finished basement so it kept the floor cleaner.

Right where I want to be.
    It's funny how habits change.
When I had the wood stacks out front under tarps, I'd also stack on the front porch so I didn't have to go out to the stacks unless the porch needed refilling.
Now that I have the shed, I rarely stack more than a days worth on the porch.
I just go out to the shed and grab a couple loads to take in the house.
Thinking of getting one of those wheeled carts to retrieve wood, then let it sit in the stove room until empty.

Yeah, as I've said before... wheels under stuff makes an incredible difference moving just about anything. I bet you'd love a firewood handtruck PD.

I usually bring in two weeks worth at a time, into the basement. I hate to stock too much in the basemwnt for several reasons......mold, being one reason....and spiders being the other. If I was to bring in a whole winters worth of wood into the basement, say, early in the season, I'd have all kinds of mold problems as my basement is musty and old......
