Hi there, i live in an urban area, and have a small garden. For some reason the squirrels are devastating this year. For some things I plant I am lucky to get 50%. Other things they destroy completely i’m hoping for a subtle, lethal solution. Can anyone suggest anything? my limitations: 1) in the city, so no guns unfortunately 2) the neighbor has a cat, so snap traps or poison also a no no If nothing lethal i might just run 2 strand polywire electric fence around the thing.
if we catch them in a trap over here.we have to shoot them in the trap.we cant take them for a swim,if caught we will get done for it.and its an offence if we let them go.
They are prolific in my area too and very destructive if allowed unchecked. I shot well over 20 last year alone. Due to those efforts I hadn't seen one in over 5 months. It was a very young one that just came out of the nest from another area. I predict by fall there will be another dozen or so to eliminate in order to keep the overall population under control. They see to cycle like grouse so some years require more effort than others. I pressure can some of them and cook some for fresh eating. Some went into the my garden beds buried deep for fertilizer. Some I left on the ground when it was really cold in December and by the next morning some other critter had carried them off. They never go to waste around here. A co-worker live traps and relocates them which is kind of hard for her because they really do not like being confined at all, and go a ballistic with anxiety. If shooting and killing them instantly was not an option for me I think I would try fencing with some sort of top cover over beds if that works for your type of gardening.
when i go out in the woods,on farms i shoot on, i could shoot as many as 15 on a saturday morning.we are at war with the grey ones, they kill off the red ones.
When our boys were just getting starting hunting on their own on our land up north they asked if they could take a red squirrel if they came across one while searching for grouse. I said they could but that I would help them clean it and they had to eat it. So off they went with a .410 pump and a 20ga single shot. I didn't think it would take long and sure enough....boom! After I showed them how to skin it out I helped them roast it on a stick over the fire. They acted like they liked it, and probably did in a way, but they never asked or shot another one. Needless to say they are not very good aside from the fact that there is really nothing to them...which was good since they each only had to take a few bites off the hinds. Since then we have cooked some greys in the pressure cooker and serve them with gravy and biscuits....now that is good eats!
Good shot! I always go for head shots with the .22 Aquila Super Colibri rounds that I use. Drops them instantly and humanely.
reds are not all over england only serton places.the grays have killed them off, so we are trying to keep the reds.by killing as many greys as we can.the greys send out a poxey to greys witch kill the reds, the greys were sent over in 1948 to kill off the reds but it got out of hand, now we want to try and keep reds,
That is weird - around here the red squirrels, although small, seem to bemore aggressive than the Eastern Gray squirrels. One of the grays that live in my back yard got smooshed by a vehicle the other day - so maybe you can encourage yours to play in traffic?
