So I went to home depot first thing this morning after discovering a puddle in the kitchen from the faucet. I always stop by the rental dept to see if they have any used makita's for sale. They have the same old one with a big $612 price tag on it. Well, it turns out it is a NOS 6401 and has never had fuel in it. Paid $450 for the saw and they threw in 2 new (non safety) chains.:saw:

Now I just need to turn it into a 7900.

Besides the weight. Compare your unbroken in 6401 to your 562xp. Might be suprised. Run same chain on both if you can or put both new chains 1 on each.

Anyone buy the nwp 84cc kit from Bailey's? I'm curios how the quality is? Figure I should be able to sell the oem top end for that.

I bought one, and the only complaint I had was the split ring. I would get a good Caber ring or just buy the kit from weedeaterman that comes with it. I never ran the saw with the 64cc jug, but it was awesome with the 84cc kit... similar in power to the stock 7900. Just an FYI, those 64cc top ends are not an easy sell. I had a hard time giving a cylinder away. Everyone wants a big bore...

There are not many people in the market for a 6400 top end.....especially for $100. Lots of people give them away. I hope you get it but wouldn't count on it. Most agree that the OEM 7900 top end is a bargain at $200. I would bite the bullet and get the OEM kit. By the way, that is a sweet deal on that saw. You don't even have to muffler mod it. No cat in that one.

I would not trade that OEM 64cc for an AM big bore.. I prefer the 64 cc saw... They are very stout..
Congrats on the very good deal!

Does Makita make their saws or does someone build for Makita?

I was glad it was a 6401 and not a 6421. Don't need to buy a muffler or gut the cat out of the oem one. If I can't sell the 64cc top end it isn't really a big deal. I'll just hang on to it.
I'll see how it runs with the stock 64cc top end but I feel it is a bit redundant with my 562xp. Planning on putting a bigger bar on this saw, like a 28".

That's a nice looking saw, don't see Makitas up here, assuming it's Japanese made?

6400 I had with ported 7900 top. Tops about $200 or less OEM. My first saw I got to pull a 32" with no problems.

I even went as far as to get a makita branded windsor bar. Yeah I was :zip: like that too at one time  .

Pic before I put the updated black cover on it with pre-filter.
