I wanted to go check out a lake 15 minutes from my house to see how close it is to ice fishing season so thought you guys might like to see a few photos. Im not the best photographer and the light was pretty poor but they are still pretty cool. Those gullies you see fill full of water fall ice as the winter progresses. You can see one forming in the chute center of the picture. Heres tundra checking out the lake. It wasnt to cold but the winds here are often brutal.
We had some cold weather for a week or so that formed the ice then almost a week of warm weather. This area has huge sustained winds and it looks to me that the wind broke the ice and pushed it up against the bank. Some of the ice is at least 6-8 inches from what I could tell but Ill stay off until its better formed. There are smaller lake trout in here as well as stocked cutthroat trout. Im an avid ice fisherman and have never fished this lake before. 18 years in a region so dont want to rush things! Check out this tree! It forms this way due to the winds hitting it from the west.
Beautiful area are the south eastern Kootenays. Thanks for sharing the pics. I have an aerial shot of that area up on my wall. My brother took it as we were headed to Calgary.
Thanks! Im hoping to fish it soon so will post some pics. It's usually gale force winds there so I'll need to dress very well.
Cool. I've lived here 18 years. It's a nice place to live. Our kids take it for granted though since they've never lived anywhere else. We encourage them to move away and experience what else is out there once they are old enough. Maybe they will appreciate it then.
Kind of looks like it eh? Not really sure if its a cave or just a shallow indent. Ill see if I can view it from a better angle next time Im there. Recognize any of the landmarks from the photos?
Is this a trick question, where a guy from BC asks a flatlander from Sask. any easy, yet un-answerable geographic question? What is 'Rogers Pass from the outside" The Coquihala as viewed from ground level 30 minutes away. The Donner Party, but if it happened in Canada. Thar be Dragons. This mountain is on Kokanee beer cans. What did I win?
I was thinking maybe you've driven through the Crowsnest pass area of Alberta. I meet quite a few Sask folks out here who spend time skiing here. The kokanee one made me chuckle.....
I haven't been west of Edmonton or Calgary for some years now. Sure is beautiful country all over in your direction.
