Nice! I scouted out my next 3 loads just before lunch. Some Hickory, Black Oak and Southern Red Oak. I saw a bunch of Locust seedlings, but nothing worth cutting.
Yeah FB is the only place I can find Locust,,,,so far. Have found a couple scores but haven’t contacted the homeowners yet. One of em is a huge trunk. Biggest locust I’ve ever seen,,,which isn’t saying much Must be 36” and 25’ long. I think that would be a live edge lumber log. If I can get it.
Anywhere there’s locust there’s seedlings I could grow my own just from the sprouts coming out of logs.
Superwinch 5500 trailer winch. Discontinued model I found on FB for half price, new in the box. It does well for a 5500. Havent found anything it can’t pull yet including the trailer and the truck. I just consider it an automatic repositioning device when that happens.
Locust Joe strikes again! How close to home was it Joe? Is it piling up faster then you can process it? Nice easy to manage size logs!
35 minutes. Plantsville. Almost your neck of the woods Just can’t help myself. Split some other locust after I got home. Then took a ride into the backroads of Portland where I know the locust is hiding. Went by both of those scores I mentioned. Stopped at the old farm that has the big log. Knocked, no answer. It does have a rot hole that’s pretty deep. Messing with my BL lumber dreams. All told I should just let them both lie. So much other work to do. Nice to know where there’s more tho. Someday I’ll have to do more exploring in that area.
I imagine you could get buku dollars for BL lumber. Can you picture a deck built out of it?!?! Forget pressure treated, that thing would last at least a hundred years. Probably way more if you sealed every surface. I'm sure someone down in Fairfield county would pay 30k in raw material alone for the deck of a lifetime
Its always nice to know where theres more BL to be had. Never know when the mania will flare up FBM seems to do well for you though.
You fellas ought to have a mini GTG and invite your northerly neighbors. I just want to touch the Locust, just a sniff, a gentle caress. BTW I’m free this Friday!!! I could bring the Supersplit
Hahahahaha I swear I said those exact words at one time Problem is Black Locust bites like a female vampire. There’s no going back from that first caress. You’ve been warned.
It’s like a 36” log. Straight as an arrow. I was thinking of slabbing it up in 3” live edge boards. Lot of table tops in that. Be honest looking at it again today I’m not even sure it’s BL anymore. If not it’s a real close imposter.
If it is BL that would be the biggest one I've seen around here. One for the books. I've seen a few 24" DBH trunks on the really big trees but not too often. They seem to die off or get blown over due to their shallow root systems before becoming that large.
On a farm somewhere there is probably a giant bl. I came across some monster sassafras and thought one had to be a state or national champion. Measured dbh, height, canopy spread and than looked up the state champion. Pfffff sure enough on a farm there was a Sassafras that dwarfed the tree I measured.
