Hey gang, something different to talk about. An older work friend recently retired and came by with this saw and gifted it to me. Said he's had it many years, don't use it and had the original blade on it. It must have been sharpend "alot"... Anyway, he said it hadn't ran in about 3 or 4 years but I could have it if I wanted it or he was gonna junk it. I gladly excepted it, we drank a beer or four , B.S'd a little and off he went. I dumped what little gas was in there, "smelled like paint thinner", Put fresh gas in, put bar oil in it and gave it a few pulls, not expecting anything! On the 7th or 8th pull, it fired up!!! And ran but I can't get it to idle. It'll run flat out well and about down to half throttle. It has good throttle response but dies very quick below half. I'm not a Husky guy, but I did find the mixture screws but before I screw around with it I'd like to get some of you Husky folks suggestions please! Thanks, Dave. Oh, *EDIT* anyone know how old this thing is?
Great saw! Always look gift saw in the exhaust What is very common is the plastic inlet snap at the cylinder heats up and loosens. Air intake leak. There is an OEM fix that’s relatively cheap. Metal band. You cut the clip stuff off or buy an intake made specifically for the band. Also the regular stuff, carb rebuild, fuel line, etc. replace the soft goods from the filter to the cylinder I like the muffler bolts!
Send a pic of the serial tag, i may be able to tell the year. It’s an OE Tag is behind the handle between the screws.
Yeah, I saw the bolts, Not sure what that is about, he did mention he had to retap the threads for what ever reason, he said the muffler kept coming loose... It did run like a banshee once I got it chugging along but once you get to about 1/4 throttle it wants to die. It has fresh 89 octane and Lucas 2 stroke 50:1 mix. Is this the correct mixture for this saw?
Have fun tinkering with it. The free MS 170 I got a few weeks ago had skunky gas in it. I did add a little Startron and it still runs boggy getting on the throttle. I'm going to pull the muffler screen off and check it. It has a new carb from a dealer.
I’d get the 346 exhaust bracket and put on that muffler. You’ll eliminate it vibrating loose. Another thing to consider is the cylinder base riser screws. They’ve been known to come loose cause an an air leak. You can remove them one at a time and apply some loc-tite to eliminate it happening. Fuel tank must be moved to get to em. Best plastic based home owner saw ever imo. They can be turned into absolute animals with a cylinder from the 346 if the time ever comes to re top-end it. Your issues sound like fuel system. Carb kit, lines and filters should fix it right up.
I will, I've never owned a Husky. I hope it don't "Fight" with my 7 Stihls on the shelf and they get along ! I don't want to go out there and break them up!
Thank you! I'm gonna file this thread for later in my box. I appreciate the input folks! By the way, I forgot to mention, it had "Super compression"!!!
I had to dump out what was in the tank with this Jon, it surley didn't smell like gas. That's why I figured it wouldn't run... It smelled like tar and paint thinner combined is my best guess. I really didn't expect it to fire up...
