Just picked up my 300 winny from the FFL, have been waiting a year for it to be finished. It’s a close duplicate to my sheep rifle (scoped one), it’s a 6.5 SAUM.

It’s a 22” Bartlien carbon wrapped barrel, Manners EF6A stock and APA DBM bottom metal. 489C7B23-6CC8-4A05-AF2A-886CD193293B.jpeg C2C34D4B-184F-4902-8365-1F074597EC3E.jpeg

That's going to have a bit of recoil.

    Moose/ bear/ Caribou gun?

I've got a 300 win mag now too, from my dad, but it's a BAR so it shoots fairly soft for what it is. It's overkill for whitetail deer though.

I have a few 300’s and this will be right there with weight, all kitted up it should be right @ 9 lbs. Its a all around caliber, definitely a angry critter gun. I normally hunt with smaller calibers than the normal, but with my boys starting to shoot. My role is now moving towards being backup shooter and security once when have meat on the ground.

Yes, but still it's a 300 win mag on a bolt action. Lots of powder, lots of bullet weight, but at least there's some heft to that particular bolt gun.

The rifle with the muzzle brake is a 6.5 SAUM, the WM just has a thread protector for now. I will try the loads I have for my other WMs and see how it goes from there. I have some 190gr LRX to try but i have a limited supply, so I will also be looking at the Hammer's and Cyuga's (both solid copper). Powder is 7977 or H1000 and Federal 215 match primers.

I sold it but shot 500gr in a 458 Lott. My biggest now is 375H&H with 350gr they make the 300WM seem like a kids gun.

Just a tiny bit bit up from the 375HH is the old mostly forgotten 375 weatherby- really not much improvement over the hh 100-200 fps and you can use 375hh in the same chamber in a pinch ,fire forms the Weatherby. built one years ago on a Santa barbara action holds a 1.5" group at 600 yards, 300 gr spire point boat tail. case full of 4831, cause that's what I had.

    Yeah, those are big boys.

That 458 Lott is like a 70 ft lb kick.

    A 7mm rem mag is around 19-20, the 300 win mag around 25, 30-06 around 20.

Here's a great chart. Rifle Recoil Table - Sortable

I looked for Backwoods Savage at the recoil on a 30-30 and it appears it's around 11 or so ft lbs. Then I looked at what a 6.8 SPC and 7.62x39 have for recoil and those two are much less than the 30-30, despite both being "more effective" than the 30-30 for most whitetail hunters. 8 ft lbs for the 6.8 and just under 7 for the x39. Those were for 7-7.5 lb guns. No wonder these two shoot so easy in my Ruger ranch rifle and ar-15 respectively. I've never killed anything but targets with my x39 AR, but the ranch rifle has taken plenty of whitetails, and it's very effective.

Good point. I have matching Ruger Guide Guns (like the one below) in .3oo Win Mag and .375 Ruger and the recoil on the bolt actions is definitely more noticeable than on something like my .338 Win Mag BAR.

I definitely need to look more but my neck has been so bad I've not shot a rifle yet this year except the .22. You might say with any jar I am gun shy right now and hate it. Oh, and btw, I foolishly missed an 8 pt last night just before dark. Dumb ole me totally miss judge the distance, but that is easy to do in low light. And I saw a total of 27 deer last evening. Except for the miss I had a wonderful show to enjoy.

I bought the 458 at a estate auction for a song and dance. Couple years later a buddy sold me out to his dentist whose rifle had some issues right before a Africa hunt. Door bell rang guy told my wife, Steve ( my buddy) said that I would sell my Lott to save his Africa trip. He asked to if he could look at it, she got it out of the safe cycled the bolt and handed her $4,000. She sold my Winchester m70 Super Grade 458 Lott, while I was at work. I guess she decided that the investment of $175 was turning a good profit.

I shoot the Barnes 175 gr Lrx . My favorite bullet.. from my experience you always want to go with a less of a grain bullet shooting a all copper bullet... Also try keeping it off the lands I think I'm back .075 to .100 thousands. That's when mine came alive.

The reason behind the 10% less grain weight for copper vs lead is because of the length of copper vs lead core. Factory guns aren’t throated for and often don’t have the proper twist rate for heavy coppers.

I had my gunsmith throat this 300 for heavy coppers with a 10 twist (lower was not readily available). Because our heavy skin, dense bone animals I prefer heavier grain bullets with higher sectional density. The 175 is only .263, 190 is .286 and 200 is .301. Moose aren’t that hard to kill but have seen them take some well placed rounds and live long enough to make it to really bad places to recover. Brown bears when unaware kill easy, but once their pizzed off the amount of lead they can soak up is scary. And in the excitement of low light and thick alders into the mix.

I have seen 165 gr x (.248sd) out of a 06 at 75-80 yards not break a front leg bone on a Canadian bull moose. Bullet was stuck in the bone, cracked it good but not shattered, the bullet lost all 4 petals. He pumped 5 broadside all should have been killing shots and would have been on whitetail or mule deer. Moose dont seem scared of horses, not being sure of how close I could get. I rode up and put it down with a slug to the noggin.

I shoot the 127 lrx in a 6.5 (.260sd), while a fantastic bullet that I dearly love. And killed a charging Alaska bull moose (much larger than the Canadian) @ 5 yards one evening then dealt with brown bears trying to take the meat that night. I can assure you that I was wishing for more frontal mass with a high sectional density.

My deer rifle is a 260AI custom ,also shoot the 127LRX through that .deadly accurate and haven't lost an animal yet.
After taking elk an deer with both bullets and seeing in an out of impact I'm a true believer in the Barnes bullets.
