For most of my hoarding career, I have paid to get my blades sharpened. I tried it myself years ago but never mastered it. So this winter I got some filing guides to save on sharpening costs.

I've had great luck with the new fancy Stihl guide on 0.325" blades that reside on my bigger saws. I picked up the cheaper setup for my MS170 though.

I sharpened the blade using the 30 degree line and thought I had it looking sharp and even but when I tried it, the saw wanted to sort of carve to the left on each cut.

What am I doing wrong that causes that? Should I maybe be using the 10 degree line? These little chains don't have the sharpening line

Make sure your sharpening each tooth equally. If you take 2 strokes on one tooth, then every tooth gets 2 strokes.

I don't think the 10° would be any good. That's more for milling. As stated above, same amount of strokes per tooth and consistent angle and pressure. Put it in a vise if possible. The 2 in 1 works really well. You'll get the hang of it.
