What's up hoarders! Hope the stoves are pumpin' this fine December night. Question for ya. I've got some big wood to buck (25"-35") from a dead Ponderosa Pine that PG&E took down this fall. I've got an ms310 with a 25" bar that was given to me. From what I can tell thats beyond Stihls recommended bar spec. Being that its softwood you think I can get away with running it without burning it up? I'd keep the chain sharp of course. Any advice would be greatly aappreciated. Here's what I'm looking at...
it will pull it but i wouldnt want to run it on it all the time stihl says 20 inch id say for oiling purposes
I'd do it and keep an eye on the oil on the chain. I'm sure the engine will pull just fine. Let us know how it goes and take some pics!
. Had a 391 with a 25” bar ... engine will pull no problem but I found the Oiler wouldn’t keep up esp in hardwoods ...
I was witness to someone cutting "30" inch elm with a 310 with a 24 inch bar. Got it done but not optimal.
I had a 16” bar on this red oak block ... I agree a 660 with a 36” bar “Wood” be much quicker ! I believed that having the whole length of the bar Buried really shows of the balls of the saw especially when in a hardwood like red-oak ... see a lot of guys thumping their chests when they are cutting balsa wood ! Lol
Uh ... nope ... it’s mtronic and actually runs a bit cooler than my other 241’s ... uses a bit more juice but hey ...
Thanks everyone for the help! Just gonna "close my eyes" and run it like I stole it. This will be my only time doing this and I'll take my time. Hopefully I can get some dry days in the 30's so that should help with the heat. Just gonna have to tell the wifey that "we" need to get a 660 and call it good.
The colder temps will absolutely warrent a richer tune. As suggested above you may need to trim the limiters to get that saw tuned.
no video needed when hes asking if it is safe enough to run the 310 with a longer bar unless he videos it in action
