Took advantage of a couple sunny days and started splitting the rounds I dragged out of the woods last fall. Mostly red oak with some white pine thrown in for some shoulder season variety. My plan was to rent a splitter in the spring, but said what the heck and started swinging the maul yesterday and did a bit more today. It split pretty easy, except for a couple of the pine chunks that are going to the fire pit at some point.

It’s an ugly pile and not in it’s permanent home for the next 3 years - just wanted to get it off the ground/snow and out of my way. I have quite a few more rounds to go, but ran out of steam.

After spending way too much time sitting on my azz this winter, you’re dead on with the sore part.

I say enjoy it while you can. Someday you'll be using only hydraulics but then you'll still wish you could swing a good maul or axe.

I find my steam powered splitter runs out a lot faster than it used to here.
