Guess it was a quick passing blast. It’s nice out now. Tons of gobbling and saw 4 hens so far. They shut up around 630 so now we wait.
5 tom turkeys strutting and fighting just south of my house this morn along with 4 jakes and 8 hens and my permit doesn’t start til May 8 figures
Had the hammer back and the bead on a nice gobbler about a half hour ago, just waiting on that last 5 feet! All the sudden here comes a deer thinking it’s play time and scared the birds off!!!! It took all I had not to feed that brown furry thing a couple ounces of #5
My turkey gun is a well weathered Mossberg bolt 395T. It patterns best with 5 shot but for some reason I always put a 6 shot in da chamber with two 5’s in the magazine. Old habits are hard to break and I try to keep my shots under40 yards. It is a full choke 28 inch barrel.
It’s amazing how different loads pattern in the same gun. My 10 gauge here likes a specific variety of Winchester #5 loads. I grab them when I can’t get them since it seems the 10gauge is a dying breed.
So this morning, one monster tom, 4 jakes, and 8 hens have been parked about 1/4 mile south of my house for two hours they are taunting me wonder if they will still be around May 8 when my permit starts,,,,,
Trying tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday. Have not heard or seen too many. Weather pretty rotten. Supposed to be better tomorrow. Good luck everyone.
Just thinking about this..... I think there’s a couple old mossberg bolt guns in the family! The ones got the externally adjustable choke and looks like the end of a howitzer barrel.
I did not measure them. I'd say one is 1 1/4 and the other is broke off on the tip hence he hanging on one. 10 3/4 on his whiskers Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Season goes out tomorrow for this South Carolina boy. I killed one the second day of season and have been seeing hearing birds ever since, but haven't got to pull the trigger again. Was under the weather yesterday and slept in this morning but I'm going to try to go in the morning before church if the weather allows.
All week I have been seeing tom’s in a burned off CRP field just south of my house. Field is just starting to green up and the turkeys love it for a strut fest. I went up today and found a big oak tree that has fallen into the CRP field from my mother in laws woods and it still has all it’s leaves. I took a hand saw, a lopper, and an old wooden chair. Cut out 4 very discreet shooting lanes and put the old chair right smack dab in the middle of downed tree. I will be sitting there about 430 Wed morn to see if I can get some shooting,,,
