My dad's season lasted 2 hours. He killed a really nice 3 point at about 40 yards our first day out. It's been several years since either of us got a buck of this caliber. After hunting another 5 days, I filled my tag today on a 3 point of my own. I inherited this .243 about 8 years ago but only made it my primary hunting rifle the last 2 years. It carries really nice with a 2-7 scope on it, and is perfect in the timber. Just like last year, I made a neck shot at about 30 yards.
Both very good blacktail bucks. I like the dark antlers on your Dad’s buck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Pick a side, count the tines. Brow tines aren't usually counted. If the tines differ from side-to-side, the rack becomes a 3x2, or 3x4, or whatever. A 10 point out East might be described a 4X out West. Edit- that's Muleys and Blacktail. Elk are the same but everything on one side gets counted.
That's funny. My Swiss Uncles used to joke about those deer, the " tiryt point bucks" they almost got.
There's definitely a freaky class of rare bucks out there. My dad has probably taken 5 or 6 of them going back to the 70's. I've got 2. They're even harder to find since our part of the state doesn't have a late modern firearm season anymore. Our trail cameras have only picked up a few over the years and none of them were regulars on cam. Just one pick during the rut never to be seen again.
My dad finished my antlers for me. Like last year's rack, they're on a maple piece that I made from my yard trees.
