2 Fridays ago a 12 year old that goes to my church killed a massive mainframe 10 point. Gross scored 189 and netted 178 green. State record is 176 and some eighths. It has stood for 20 years. He killed it here in McCormick county, a county that has most of its land base in federal land and is not known to produce big deer on average. My wide showed me the deer the night he killed it, she's friends with his mom on facebook. I just glanced at it assuming he and his dad wereally on a paid trip to say Illinois or something. wasn't till the next mourn that she posted it was killed in McCormick country and I looked close at it!! 12-year-old hunter threatens South Carolina's top record book buck
Wow, good for him! One of my buddies nephew's did that, it was his first time hunting here in OH and a very nice 12 point walked out in the woods. It wasn't a record or anything but was definitely one of the nice bucks killed that year around here. He shot at it from 80 yards with a .410 slug, missed the first shot and the deer still stood there. He somehow got it right in the heart on the 2nd shot and it only ran 50 yards or so before dropping. It was irresponsible of the dad to let him take the shot, but I can't say anything because it was a clean kill.
That is one dandy buck! Congratulations to that young man. Let us hope it does not shrink much before the re-measure! Would be neat to have the state record.
blacktail ,knowing how big he i's and seeing that pic hanging I wouldn't be surprised if that deer weighed over 225#. it almost looks right at 200 to me. I will have my wife ask his mom the weight. I have never killed a buck over 200# . and I have killed as old as 6.5 year olds. my heaviest is 197
Congrats to the young lad! Using the 12 year old boy as a scale reference I highly doubt that this deer would be over 200#. Going to be close on the final net score too after the 60 day drying period. A typical rack will shrink 1-2% during drying with the inside spread usually taking the biggest hit. Best of luck to him. Records are meant to be broken
Yep that spread will be where the inches are lost. and your thoughts are mine on the weight and the scale with him.
I've always heard the southeastern deer were small bodied, but the 200lb range ain't bad at all. And considering you can probably take multiple deer per year in many southern states, that's a lot of filled freezer space.
Basically no limit. here. I'll go into detail later. most decent bucks I kill at my place are 175to 185
The only times I see bucks like that are, during closed season, 1/2 minute past the days close of or just before open hours and of course all winter when I am plowing snow. And of course the pictures that everyone else shows. sigh!
Our coastal region has no limit. I think there 2 deer a day limit. my area has a 2 deer per day limit or one buck a day, 5 bucks per county, but no one counts that. it use to be 10 bucks then 7 now down to 5. but that's per county!! doe days have been cut in half the last decade but no doe limit per season, just one per day, unless u have doe tags to use cause you get one doe on doe day but a second would have to be tagged.
