I finally got around to getting to this. This is the 046 that I got a bit ago from MacLaren. She's a beauty in such great shape. She's got a 8 spline sprocket and rockin' a 20" bar. Fired right up with such a throaty tune. I can see why this model is so popular. Its got plenty of power without being too hefty...

That is a fine example of a late model 046. It really looked new to me when I seen it and ran it. He's got an 064 in almost that good of shape.

Its definitely one of those saws that can find its way into your heart. Eventhough I still haven't fully got a tank of gas through her yet, but I like what I see already.

Yea, she doesn't have too many hours under the belt. I'm hoping to fix that here soon.

I'm sure you will get to run it some. Might cut into the run time on the 660 with that there.

Funny you mention that... when I first ran her, she reminded me of that 660, just like the mini me version. After her surgery, she should definetly be a mini me of that 660. Yea, she might cut into some that time, but I bought that 660 for the big wood that I encounter while scrounging, so she'll always have a place in the line. Kinda of like batter number 4 in the line up, the clean up batter.

You get that one modded and you'll really enjoy running it.

    Awesome looking/running saw!

But there is quite a bit more power to be had from one of those, cheap and easy upgrade too.... Right this way sir....

Does the stock muffler outlet look like this?

If so, try one of these -

The difference is astounding. Both in sound quality (and quantity, ) and the power output.

Lots of aftermarket options that work great for about $30, you might just have to cut the baffle out of one of those.

The OEM muffler is about $90 IIRC.

Doesn't take long to run a few tanks through one of those! :D

A Stihl dual port muffler would be nice for her. I got one for my 660 a few years ago. Think I got it from a place in Forks,Wa. for $60? Hard to remember exactly what I paid.

That thing needs a trip to TN. That will fix all of that exhaust outlet stuff.

Congrats on the 046 again. That was a very fine example of an original.

I wouldn't worry about modding the muffler. Leave it to Randy. They do fantastic work. He will take care in making that outlet the right size ;)

Well I got to take the 046 out again yesterday...this thing is awesome. I think running it more than one cut at a time helped too. But it just seemed to be so smooth handling. Really like the balance that its got. I'm running the 8 sprocket with 20" bar right now with it.

The diet for it yesterday was some nice Hackleberry and Red Oak logs. I ended up running about another 2 tanks of gas through it yesterday, seems to be settling end nicely. The more I run this thing the more I love it.

On side note, I did notice yesterday, that for every tank of fuel that I used it did use the majority of the oil. Usually with the other says that I've dealt with the oiler side is usually about 1/2 full. Anything to be concerned with, I know oil is a good thing should I back it off?
