I have an 029 Super and for the most part it has been a trouble free saw. I was out cutting yesterday and it started like normal and seemed to be fine. When I had it in the cut, it simply stopped like I had shut it off, but I didn't. I let it sit for a few minutes and tried again but it did the same thing. Any thoughts about the cuase if this? Thanks
I think I've had that happen where the bar was dirty and a piece of crud had gotten into the sprocket and jammed it up. I think it died but now I'm second guessing myself. Does the chain move freely on the bar? Will it idle? Only in the cut? Can you rev it out of the cut? Have you cleaned the clutch area and used a flat blade to get the crud out of the bar recently?
The engine died and the chain moved freely on the bar. I had to let it sit for a few minutes before I could get it started again. I am wondering if it could be a fuel issue.
Could be a split fuel line. A clogged fuel filter. A fuel filter that fell off and then the line got clogged. A dirty screen on the carb. A dirty needle pin inside of the carb. Could be a dried out old black rubber diaphragm inside the carb. They should be soft and flexible, not stiff and coated with like a varnish. I'd check the fuel line and filter first. Open the tank and take a peek inside. Here's some before and after pics of the 034S carb when I got it. Very dirty.
But cheap chineseium doesn't last long at all, so in the end it pays to get the oe. I've been there, done that. In fact the cheap one made the saw feel like it didn't have near as much power, so the timing curve in it must have been wack. After OE swap, saw was a monster again.
The two posts above would be my first thought. Run it and when it dies out pull the plug and check for spark while it is hot. Wait until it cools and then check it again.
My other option is buying a Stihl 362. I don't know which one would be best, M-tronic or not. I will check for spark when it is hot. Thanks
I love my 029 Super! I just repaired it here back a few months ago from a stripped out plug. Get it fixed Erik B , you won't regret doing it. Try fuel issues first. I had the vent tube fall off once and it started running like $#!T, check that simple little tube on the left side of the saw and see if it's missing. If it is, "There" is your problem.
Why not just go for the ms400? Otherwise if you want to save some $ there's echo or Makita. The 362 is a great saw, but if buying new it's lost a step to other saws. Heck, there's some nice Husqvarna saws in that power to weight range that would be great. I like the makitas because most use standard 3/8 chain.
I have an 029super as well. Great saw. Super reliable. But... It's heavy for what it is, and there's a lot of saws that are lighter and or more powerful.
