I have the opportunity to pick up an 028 for $75. I have it here. needs a new muffler which I have, fixed the starter cord already, it starts and runs, but the chain slips and stops, sprocket got hot and smoked, sprocket is worn bad, by the way, it has the 7 spur sprocket, looks like its attached to the drum. Any way, is there a way to check the clutch and how hard is it to replace?. This is my first time doing any work on a saw, this site gave me the itch

Just get a new drum with the 7 pin spur. The likelyhood your clutch needs replacing is low. when you pull the drum, just remove the clutch and clean the surfaces that contact the inner part of the drum and inspect it.. You can even hose it off with brake cleaner if you want. re-install with new drum/spur, and problem should be resolved.
028's usually have the opposite problem with the chain "not" wanting to stop spinning cause the springs are weak.

Changing out the sprocket and clutch is easy. You could change the sprocket and clean the clutch as Hedgerow said and see how she does. If you need a new clutch - easy to do - just remember it's reverse thread. Good luck! Cheers!

There isn't much on that saw that can't be fixed pretty easily, short of splitting the cases. And even that can be learned with a little practice. I would say go for it and have fun working on it.

Check eBay - used can be hit or miss - some sellers only sell good parts, others sell whatever came off the saw regardless of condition. You could look up seller brooksy_31 - I sold him a huge Stihl parts lot - I'm pretty sure he has what you need - if you give him the part number I'm sure he could check. Cheers!
