Today, LOT's of yard/garage sales going on here at the shore, winding down for labor day weekend. We drove past a yard sale in the neighborhood just this morning and I saw this 020 on a table. The old fella was leaving his home for assisted living and wanted $100.00 for the saw, said he had it since new. He said it ran but was sitting in the garage since about 2010. I pulled it through, lots of Compression but I didn't try to start it. Gas smelled like paint thinner and urine... I dropped him 5 Jacksons and went on my way, Didn't even try to haggle with the old fella. I Immediately dumped the gas. I can't mess with it now, but I'll clean it up tomorrow and see if it'll run. If anything, It's a neat old saw. I have no idea how old it is but I'm guessing 70's? Any thoughts? Also, anyone know if this is a 1/4" chain? It's small, can't read it yet.

Thanks, I kinda looked at it that way, poor old guy leaving his home, he sold it. He didn't seem sad, I guess he had no family. I guess the assisted living place takes all their assets.
My wife and I have to go to our Daughters for a cook out, but I had to play with the saw a bit. Put some new/fresh gas in, pulled it through a few times after a little P.B. blaster down the carb incase rings are stuck. Compression is REAL strong! It didn't fire. I'm assuming the carb is all gunky inside so, I pulled plug and used my little gas squirt bottle, sprayed a little gas in cylinder, put plug back in and she FIRED off on the first pull! ran maybe 5 seconds and quit. I know she'll run now! I sprayed it a couple more times in the carb screen and she popped off again! . I'm gonna enjoy this little project I think! I believe I gotta get a carb though. He did say he hasn't touched it since about 2010, and gas was in it!
lovely little saw Dave. I’ve been in and out of buZZsaw BRAD with a rear handle a too many times to count. That saws problem was no spark. You got that beat already. Have fun with the project.
I have a rear handled version 020. Impulse buy a couple years ago. Myself and M2theB determined it was 1973. Barely used with original case and cardboard sleeve. He got it up and running for me. Thought i had pics somewhere. Ill take some tomorrow.
I did some digging, this saw has a 1/4" chain, I didn't realize it at first. The later saws had the 3/8". This must be a very early one. I hope when I get this up running decent, I have to find a chain, this one is pretty shot!. I just purchased a carb rebuild kit for it, (can't get a carb) can't find one. As said, I did get it to fire up and it has super compression. It couldn't have been used much, he only had some scrub evergreens and a couple dog wood trees in his yard. He didn't do much as he got older and said he hadn't touched the saw in years. I'm gonna dig to see if I can find a year on it. *Edit*, after finding some manufacturing dates, it's either a 1971, 2 or 3. the 3/8" chain showed up in 1973 as well.
Heres mine. Havent run it in a while. Didnt check chain size but i think its 1/4" Think i paid $180 plus the parts M2theB used to get her running. Its for sale if interested.
Made in (West Germany), I'd think I'd keep it just for that! Nice saw Brad and if anything a conversation piece and a piece of History. That saw is 50 years old as mine is I think!

I cleaned the garage grunge off it and determined it was a 1/4" chain on it. I pulled it through a few times and it started on Choke. It won't stay running but it's getting some fresh gas and oil inside. I'll let some fresh gas soak in the tank, maybe get into the carb a bit and I'll do the rebuild kit when I get it.
Good score and good on you for helping that old fella out. Those saws were legendary in their time and are still packed with power for their size. And they sound amazing too! I will say that it's best to tear it all down and put some new seals in it. There's almost no doubt that the seals are old and stiff, and you need crankcase pressure/vacuum to actuate the fuel pump diaphragm inside the carburetor. While it's down you can do a good inspection on thr saw and know that it's 100% inside.
Thanks for that Scotty!!! I'm not 100% sure I want to tear it down yet. It started, ran briefly, I'm kinda happy it did what it did and I might let a sleeping dog lie. It's a neat old saw and I'm wondering if I should do that to it. I "really" don't need to use the saw, but I bought it for more Nostalgic reasons. We'll see.
