This Post is about my childhood and some of the logging methods back then. We didn’t have a chainsaw we cut the trees down with and ax, and cross-cut saw. We used a mule to pull the logs. I remember the first Chainsaw we had, it was a two man saw,if anyone has ever seen one it’s a beast. It had a Clinton engine (4 ) stroke, it was loud as hell, not to mention the vibration, especially if you had the end of the handle opposite of the motor. The bar was about 36”.On the motor end it had handle bars like a bicycle. It was a beast to say the least, it probably weighed 30lbs. or more. As we progressed we took a dual axel International truck and shorted the frame on it put chains on the wheels so it would pull better. We called it a short dog skidder. We would them pull the logs to a sawmill we had setup in the woods close to where we were cutting the logs. The saw blade was round of course and we ran it with a Farnall H tractor with a wide belt hooked to the tractor belt drive. By the way the tractor started on gas and after it got hot you switched it over to kerosene. My job was called the off bearer, in other words I would take the slabs to the slab pile. In the winter we would burn them after being cut to stove length. We cut wood for general purpose for barns and for other people in the community. I remember having to change the teeth on the saw, it took a special tool to remove them and put new ones on. Yes it was pure hard labor back in the day...Have a nice day! Stumper
”papadave” can you add anything to this Post? I just wonder if anyone has any experience in this field?
Nope, not me. Until moving here, I lived in the big city, although I did play "off bearer" for a few days back in '08. Sounds like you've been around for a couple minutes there Stumper . Have you met Backwoods Savage ? He might know a couple things about what you're talking about.
