Fuel pump krapped out on me today. 97 ram. How big a job is it to drop the tank n put a new one in. Anyone ever pop a hole in the tank and put on a 30$ napa electric fuel pump. Howdja seal a line into the tank with no leaks?
Take the bed off, its easy. ETA: You don't even have to pull the bed. Unbolt the bed, unplug the tail lights and unhook the filler hose it-then slide the bed back a few feet. The fuel neck is the worst of it and it ain't bad.
I dropped mine using a motorcycle jack one time. Worked pretty good, but pulling the bed may be betterer.
In the northeast here where we use salt on the roads cars rust pretty bad. My sons 97 Chevy 1500 needed a pump and it was easier to cut an access hole in the bed with a sawzall. All worked out because he has a tool box that covers it.
I had a '79 Ford work truck years ago, an old beater. I cut three sides and bent a flap up, in the bed, to unstop the fuel pickup. Before I got around to welding it back down, I had to bend it up and unplug the pickup 2 more times. Never did weld it.
I bought my son a used Hyundai Tucson a few weeks ago and was doing the brakes on it, started looking around for the fuel filter and could not find it in any of the normal places, Finally looked in the book and found they put the filter in the tank, I about came unglued, why would you put a filter that needs replaced in the fuel tank?. Than found that they put a access cover under the back seat to gain access to top of tank to pull filter and pump, still have to pull the back seat out though but better than pulling the tank
