Bark is deceiving because it is dead and weathered. Give me ten min and I'll post a pic of a healthy one in my yard.
Look back on page 1 at the pic of the top of the tree. Not beech.
Next clue: If you look closely at the bark in these pics you can see some of the "fish scale" bark that hasn't worn off yet.
I hate waiting for oak.
I'm saving the pic of the trunk until tomorrow. It still has some of the tell-tale signs on the bark. You guys will get it then... Unless someone...

Tree is in MD It appeared to be standing dead. The bark is a bit deceiving. I think some of the distinguishing features weathered/flaked off?
The leaves beside it are unrelated.
