I woke up unrested, tired, and cranky and didnt sleep well. GF had dogsat at her daughters and came home around noon. I was going to work on stacking/sorting/cleaning in the processing area, but thats not as much fun as cutting so i decided to head to the honey hole despite the dew point being over 70. The sun had been out but it turned out to be mostly cloudy and hazy. I dont like humidity, but 10X worse with full sun. It did come back out but area was mostly shaded by then. Walked to the back of the mound when i first got there and had a close encounter with a wild turkey. Couldnt get a pic. Ended up cutting and loading for 2 hours. Got soaked with sweat, but came home feeling better. The power of wood hoarding! All red oak this trip. I had loaded about 2/3 of the sections and was too lazy to rearrange and "sardine" pack them. I started cutting and almost crushed this snail. He tried to run away...very slowly! Poor thing, the chain saw scared the doo doo out of him! I had an audience. Toad her to turn that frown upside down! the log i took was trying to come back to life. Almost felt guilty bucking it. My nemesis from the thread I like heavy metal, but my chain saw doesnt. left double length uncut. Bracket was right inline with cut. Ended up splitting it to remove bracket then bucking. 30" rounds. First time ive bucked there with 36" bar on the 460. Noodled a couple logs and it did dull it. severe storms were forecasted for late afternoon. I took a break and saw this storm cloud forming North of where i was cutting. Didnt realize it til i loaded the pic that it looks like a Polar bear! the mound when i left. Maybe 20-25% cut in my guesstimation. Couple bucked logs i didnt feel like moving. One smaller oak log underneath moved when i stepped on it. Ended up rolling it with peavey and cutting e few logs off with 290 unloaded sections awaiting the Fiskars and noodling. should be enough to finish the last row in the stack behind my shed. Each row two face cords. Two cords for entire stack. All red oak. Between heat, humidity, nature, and metal bracket an adventurous day at the HH! I was sweaty and somewhat beat, but mentally felt better. Showered and had pizza with GF at stepaughters as she is dogsitting again.
Way to go, brother, especially with the heat y'all had. Be careful out there, drink plenty of water. Looking good.
Great that you turned your day around, and saw some wildlife too! I bet you slept better last night. That honey hole is looking a lot smaller!
Nice story Buzzsaw. It is amazing what a good score can do for the state of mind. First time I’ve seen snail poop. Thanks for that. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Man,# 8 picture of the metal has what i've been dealing with beat all the way!! You should split that out, but leave the wood where its hung on the block. and put a hanger on the back and hang it out by your splitter, as a remembrance. lol One thing for sure, it was pretty obvious where it was. Great pictures by the way!
I will be posting another thread B.Brown about the bracket log...here goes. My "splitter" is a Fiskars X27 ax btw.
you score any wood this weekend or too hot for ya? How was the camping trip? We're going probably next week.
Quiet on the wood market lately. No worthwhile scores. I’m definitely craving a fix. Camping was great but no wood by Gettysburg. Great place to visit though. Where u camping and how much wood u bringing? Whooooooooooooodddd! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
we are going to a state park in NW Connecticut. Sites are in huge Eastern white pines and along a river. My brother and i camped there a lot many years back. Hour and a half from here. GF was a girlscout leader for years and loves to rough it. I mean sleep in tent, cook on fire etc. Im the same way. We dont mind some rain , but if forecast for a lot we wont go. May go to Acadia, ME in Sept. Ill bring a couple totes of cut up hardwood pallets (dont have much) and scrounge wood from the area as well. Part of the fun of my camping is scrounging the wood of course! When my bro and i went he loved to burn dead pine. He would hike a half mile into the woods and return with a full intact "Charlie Brown" pine tree, maybe 4-6"diameter base. Quite the sight in the campground. Its been too hot for scores although i did go to the HH. Ive spied some in my travels to and from work, but long days and tired to grab any. Going to HH within the next week.
