Mostly uglys and shortys from when I first started hoarding. As long as it fit in my trunk or back seat I would throw it in. Now I know better and try to split it first on-site. Easier to move split and if it won’t split I don’t take it. One of the uglies must be oak... it smells string of whiskey. One I think ash.. usually easy but a
Big branch is holding the grain together. A red oak crotch. One big cherry crotch too.
Take back to the dump? Noodle? Leave it in the moisture until winter to soften? Eh, no rush, they are out of the way.
The short and ugly piles.. and the one that smelled like booze. What kind of oak does that likely make it?

Bonfire wood! Red oak smells like pizz to me. Had 2 rounds inside the Raptor today and you would think I had a golden shower. Can’t get rid of the smell. Whooooooooood!

I'd noodle 'em if you don't have a hydro splitter...might want to keep an eye out for a good deal on a used electric one on CL or FBMP. I snagged a used one for $60 a few years back, just to keep in the garage for busting up larger pieces so to make them fit better when "loading to the gills" on cold winter nights.
Don't forget, those uglies burn longer than the average piece of the same species wood...its more dense...therefore worth a little more trouble IMO...

I’m also trying to figure out what to do with my shorts and uglies... had an IBC tote worth that I burned this spring to prevent going into next years wood. Got way more than that now.. I’d honestly rather burn the shorts and uglies first... considering building a small greenhouse that will double as a solar powered firewood kiln. Kiln Dried Uglies so I can burn em quicker and not have to deal with em or look at em and nothing goes to waste... guess I should get to work on that..

An old timer I met years ago used to call the shorts "momma wood" in reference to what his wife would use when he was away. I'll forever use that term when talking about the short length splits.

looking great mrfancyplants . I give you lots of credit for hand splitting/sledge & wedge those. Im too lazy and will noodle away. Have several around waiting for the saw. The oak that smelled like whiskey was probably white oak. They make whiskey barrels out of it. My personal favorite hardwood. Watch me process it and ill sniff the fresh splits!!!

I was going to call it a “short stack,” but maybe a “shorty short stack of mama wood.”

Shorties are fine but I don't mess with uglies anymore. They get tossed directly into a burn pile and lit up each winter with all the brush gathered throughout the year. Just ain't worth messing with IMO.

I throw them all in a tote & give them to the local Boy Scout troop as campfire wood. No muss no fuss.

Used to keep every scrap. I worked for em. Got so many now I’m burning them on top of some tree stumps in my yard.
Chair, beer and fire. People pay good money for that.

You surely do have some uglies in there.

I still burn most of the uglies and shorts but there are a few that get thrown away.
