Worked on SS the red oak from this weeks scores this afternoon. I redid the pallets behind my shed a couple weeks ago as the old ones were hastily done. The next wood to cut from my honey hole is more red oak so i wanted room for it. each row would be a 1/2 cord, but i decided to go 2/3 cord as i have a boatload coming yet. 5'x13' piles, 3 deep. mound of red oak splits from December & January scores that needed to be stacked. (pic from January) same mound i finished stacking today in my processing area. The weathered end splits are from a recent score. I now have room for a few more truckloads of rounds. This is the best ive done in keeping up with stacking. I have to as the wood keeps coming! Onward i hoard! Stay tuned!
Did you leave a space between the stack and the shed wall? If not, what’s the plan to keep water from getting trapped in there? Could be a magnet for carpenter ants, termites and rot...
spaced a few inches as i have done in the past. Ill tuck the tarp down the back. I scrounged some old aluminum roof panels recently and may build a roof over it. Been meaning to for years stuckinthemuck
Good looking there, Brad. Glad you have some space between the shed and stacks, I was nervous like stuckinthemuck seeing that. In your second picture, looks like a lot of nice splitting red oak - I bet that was fun to work up! Hardly anything there not straight. I'm jealous. Lol
The wood gods have sent me some nice oak in the last 18+ months, both red and white BigPapi . I didnt even sacrifice a virgin to them either! LOL!!! I normally never separated by species, but since joining FHC i do. Bring your truck and trailer down and we'll cut a load for you from my honey hole!
That's a heck of an offer Brad - I'll be in Waterbury and Hamden this summer for work and may just take you up on it! Unless I'm in a company car by then. If so, it'll be an awfully small load! Employer just started doing company cars, choice of Hyundai Santa Fe or Sonata. Neither of which is hauling much wood - but I'd sure like to burn some white oak, as we have none in my neck of the woods.
take the Sante Fe and you can post in the car hoarding thread BigPapi I owned a 2003 Sante Fe bought new in 2003. Wife got it when we separated next year. She later totaled it. Hamden is next town over from me. Ill gladly put some white oak aside from my honey hole. I was looking at what is there yesterday and the rounds are HUGE...both red and white! Dunno if ill still have access or what will become of it. The sign has been taken down and no other activity since i was there a month ago. I was kinda putting off starting in on it, but now that i have im on a mission from, well...the FHC!
Well at the very least we should get together for a beverage - I'll be sure to pm ya when I get down that way.
sounds like a plan. BTW if your user name was anything to do with a certain NY team who's name i wont mention, the offer would not have been made. I still havent recovered from the 1986 world series and have not been a baseball fan since.
Looking good Brad, looks like your weather has been nicer than mine. We are expecting g rain all day today and my 8 year old flag football playoffs will most likely be cancelled. I need a good day of splitting and stacking.
it was damp and humid yesterday. I was surprised i did as good as i did. Hate humidity. Once i get in the zone im good to go. Got sweaty, dirty, dusty, but those go hand in hand when making firewood or course! Rained out today for sure MikeyB
I use aluminum roof panels myself, I just stack the top with a bit of slope so it sheds rain to the side. Your red oak has nice straight grain. For a moment there I thought your honey hole might be a saw mill...
Nope, im fortunate to have scored lots of straight grained trunks dgeesaman My honey hole yet to cut pictured...LOTS more oak!
Shhhh........ don't tell anybody, that's his secret. Nice looking stacks ya got going there buZZsaw BRAD . Quality work.
