I have been on the web trying to identify the tree by that unique pale fleshy cork bark, but no luck. Ailanthis has a bark like that, but not as thick and fleshy so I ruled that out plus the wood is too dark.

damm, hickory, maple, beech and aspen are the only ones I can think of with thin bark .
And I'd have guessed hickory of some sort as well.

Same thread on another site and op said it was catalpa. Doesn't look like any catalpa I've seen but regional differences are a thing

It’s not my log. Guy who has it mills wood and apparently it makes beautiful lumber

Catalpa? The trees with the white flowers that get the long bean pods dangling from them? Didn't know the lumber was any good. Leaned something new!

Me too. A certain time of year Catalpa worms get on the leaves. They are absolutely the best catfish bait. When you put them on the hook thread them inside out. Something about their aroma.
