    I love alder. Splits easy, is generally straight, seasons fast, grows like a weed, and doesn't leave a mess in the house. It's given me burn times much longer than the BTU charts would indicate.
    The amount of ash and the orange stained clothes from processing it are the only downsides.

    Well, you still have to lift that log up to the splitter. Set it vertically and no more of that useless lifting. Much, much easier on the back.
