It's a pignut that's probably 17-18" dbh and about 12- 13 at the bottom of the larger fork. It doesn't look as intimidating in the photo as it does standing under it. I think I'll pass it up especially since I have another pignut on the ground almost next to it that's maybe 14" at the base and 80 to 100' long.
Looks like an all you can eat buffet set up for you. Wish we had them here, I'm just north of its range.
Take it...straight,clean and lots of BTU's. I like them like that, not on the ground and still green inside. Knot free for the most part too. Of course youve got a boatload in that honey hole! Could always come back to it?
There's no way to get it all and although I like pignut I'm not going to put my life in danger for firewood. As I said the photo doesn't show it as it is. I'll get a photo next time I'm in there and show how high the tree is above ground which is above my head by the fork and chest high at the stump. If it was my only wood to get I would figure a way but there is more than I can cut/gather and I'll get the easier, safer wood 1st. Another thing, although it's adjoining my property it's about 1/2 mile from my house and I work alone. If something happened I would be sol.
It is good to know your comfort zone, especially when you are on your own. Looks like there is lots more around to get anyway.
after further studying the pics i dont blame you. Too much ground clutter and plenty of ground wood to pick from. You are exactly right when you say dont risk your life for wood. If you dont feel comfortable its not worth it. Be safe!
Backwoods savage, Winter hasn't ended here yet, lots of snow here yet, probably still 3'- 4' in the woods, we have had some melting in the last week tho. Still getting some cold temps, it was -20 a coupe nights ago.
I would say leave the tree that is hung up and clean up everything else looks to be a lot of wood there. Let Mother Nature work on the hanger for awhile and see what happens.
