I tend to use the terms interchangeably. But if I consider it, I think of chimneys as masonry and flues as stainless. I rarely see “flue” used on FHC, maybe it’s a Southern thing.
    Which/how do you say it?

I grew up calling the masonry chimney fireplace "the flue" in Colorado.

Geez, made me think.:D I seem to in general terms refer to the whole works as a chimney (time to clean the chimney) but also call it the stack. When I refer to temps, I seem to say flue temps or stack temps (the flue probe is showing 500 f). I'm gonna go confuse myself a little more now.

I usually am talking about the outside part when I say chimney. The flue to me is the inside part, aka stovepipe. The stack is the whole thing.

And I don't have a clue if I am right.

I think of the chimney as the structure that holds the flue (smoke path) so for modern pipe chimneys they are one in the same, many masonry chimneys contain more than one flue or smoke path.

For me,, my chimney is made of brick and it holds my flue pipe.
