Was the $15K of waterproofing to protect against that type of flood? Any intelligence from the neighbors on the frequency and severity of the flooding? Maybe building nothing below that line is the answer?

That is the strangest thing to see all that wood just floating o_O . Glad you made out somewhat ok. We had some serious flooding up this way too.

Hope y'all made out alright, Smokin... It wasn't a fun experience but we fared pretty well considering. It could have been much worse. From chatting with neighbors this sort of thing happens every few years. It happened with Sandy but not nearly as bad (but we didn't have the fence then). I walked the neighbor's woods and MOST of my wood is over there. I didn't realize I had that much. It'll be work to gather and restack, but what's a little sweat and a sore back? It does suck seeing hours worth of work, sweat, and a little blood and bashed fingers float right outta your life...

Mom and Dad came up yesterday and today. The fence is back up so the dog is happy. We replaced two posts, re-set and concreted the fence, found a bunch of rails and had to pick up ten to replace broken ones. I put gravel in most of the enlarged holes for the posts and I think they'll be a bit stronger next time. Mom started putting some wood into piles, too. Very lucky to have them around.

We're trying to figure out the best placement for my stacks now, and possibly a small wood shed to help contain splits during a flood. I'm thinking something 18" high and bulky with wire around it. And the wood placed next to the shed since flow didn't seem as hard on that side.

Getting the fence repaired makes a big difference. The rest is just more yard work at this point. I'll bag debris and junk tomorrow. At some point I'll need to tear down the mower and trimmer though. That'll be a learning experience...

you handled the situation well, better than most would have. Sorry you lost your wood, but that can be replaced. Don't get discouraged. How often does flooding occur in your yard?
I am so glad I built high up on the side of a hill. It can be rough in the winter, but I have that fairly well under control. (I only go out when I want to!)
