If it was a genuine real clear ceramic, it shouldn't have shattered. Glass will. If the splits are frozen hard or frozen oak, and thrown against the ceramic it could crack, not shatter. That ceramic is tough stuff since we burners screw up too often ( me).
I can say for sure that the new ceramic doesn't shatter because when I restored my stove..... I dropped it. Cracked in two.
Screwloose and buZZsaw BRAD, the only thing I can think of is the house filled with smoke from taking out all the smoldering logs and carrying them outside. My smoke detectors would have been screaming! After that maybe the fireplace was too cool to draft properly with coals that were half smothered from the once newly loaded logs that were sitting on them. My stove has incredible draft and even when cold starting smoke rarely even trickles out, but my brothers stove has draft that only works when things are hot and cooking. I have been trying to figure out why my brothers stove (that seems to have all the right physics in place to draft properly) has a hard time getting started. The only thing I can think of is he does not run it steady so it goes to full cold every time and his Hearthstone Clydesdale stove uses soap stones as firebricks. My theory is the much heavier dense soapstone gets very cold when sitting and they have considerable thermal mass so it takes a while to get everything heated up and drafting. One thing that has lead me to thinking this is that upon lighting up and getting it ablaze when you start shutting the door the viewing glass condensates instantly and you need to leave the door cracked for a while to keep it blazing and dry up the window. I have even seen the stones sweating as well. During this start up period a noticeable odor of smoke does come into his home and so its a bit of a dance with his stove until everything is piping hot and drafting. This phenomenon of smoke that on cold starts doesn't seem to know which way to go doesn't happen with my stove.
Different stoves will react differently to cracked glass and smoke. For instance, if they have an "airwash", that is a downdraft or updraft right by the glass which is meant to keep the glass clean, then most likely the smoke would come out if the glass were broken.
Wow, glad everyone is ok and nothing came of it. I never even considered the glass shattering like that from a log rolling into it. I've had a few logs roll forward and thud the glass a little. I will keep this in mind when placing my logs going forward for sure. However as mentioned about ceramic which my stove has is much tougher, gives me a lil more peace of mind.
No house fire no problem. Our glass cracked and I do remember that Lopi was very proud of their replacement piece $180 ouch. Have been much more careful since then. I can remember them saying after my little rant and calling a local glass shop. Ceramic glass is expensive because it has to be specially made. Crack verses shatter makes the extra money worth it to me. Thanks for sharing and glad your okay.
This post got my attention, here's a pretty good representation of what the modern ceramic can handle.
That's incredible!! Wife laughing at me over my expletives of amazement. I load E/W and always wondered how much they can take.
Thats about how I reacted when I saw this as well. Helps when a company you've bought from shows you this. So basically just cut your wood so that when you latch the door there is no pressure on the glass, but it can take a mean blow.
I cleaned mine lots n lots of times with a soaking wet paper towel when hot with no problems....i just keep goin across it until the ceramic glass cools down....its very good rigid stuff.
It's amazing how much stoves have advanced in the past 30 years. I know I feel much safer now than I did when I was a kid and my grandparents had an old smoker of a stove.
I have an older Trailblazer that came with a house I bought 20 yrs ago. I kept it when I moved and have since moved it to my machine shop for when I working out there or when we ride snowmobiles and need a place for friends to warm up and dry out their gear. I "had" a ceramic glass door. It cracked when I had a piece roll towards the hinge side corner while I was closing it. It was one of those times when your brain thought faster than your hand could act. I was going to get a piece of glass, but after they quoted the cost, a steel panel sounded better. I had my guy shear it to the exact size of the glass and I installed it the same way you would the glass. If I choose , I can get a piece of ceramic down the road. I really only need heat in the shop, so I don't see that happening.
I know you said that is in your shop, but the wife would kill me if I ever put a piece of metal in place of the window lol
This happened November 2017,just a few minutes after cleaning it,just had one left to do as you can see.Heard a loud pop across the room, looked over & said quite a few very loud words I don't say too often..... Thing is firebox & glass were cold, there was a warm spell for a few days prior so no fires going.Even the oven cleaner & windex I normally I use were room temp. But this tempered glass was over 25 years old, guessing it has a shelf life like everything else so to speak.... Only had 1 spare piece left in cardboard sleeve stored under the stairs, after taking measurements went online & ordered 3 more extras, they arrived in about a week so it worked out OK.No business locally had that size in stock anymore unfortunately. Many years ago I lost one when a log or chunk fell against it,woke up next morning to see same thing, figured all that heat right against it for several hours caused the failure. This type is rated at 600 degrees, dont know what time limit however. Welcome to the forum SequoiaFarm. Whereabouts are you in MI? Also, if you are interested we have a gathering (called a GTG or Get-Together) of hoarders at our place in the spring. This year will be May 3-4. You are welcome to come. There will be another threat started about the GTG very soon. Watch for it.
