With a 22-ton splitter, I still split ash rounds with the 8-lb. maul. Then, the splits aren't just tossed into a random heap but made into these 'teepee' pyramids. They sit like this until they are stacked, maybe 2 or three weeks. Can anyone think of any logical reason for this weird behavior? It is a gorgeous day to fart around with ash rounds. I can't vouch for the tee pee piles but as for the ash, I'd rather split them by hand too. It's easy splitting for the exercise.

Yes. We are 120 miles from where the EAB started in the USA. All the ash are gone except for babies which won't last either.
Was thinkin' of storing the maul in the pyramids (like razor blades) to keep it sharp, heheh. Pyramid power !!

We get those tracks on spruce. Spruce Beatle I'm told.

I like to let fresh splits sit in the pile for the first few months of drying before stacking...seems like it should reduce the tipping risk. And there is nothing weird at all about choosing to swing a maul on a nice day at reasonable sized straight grained rounds instead of using the splitter. I ran out of rationalization before I came up with anything for your teepees:loco:

I'll bet the tee pees happen because you don't have to bend all the way down to the ground to pick them up later…?

Have you ever hand bailed and rolled teepee hay? Maybe you want to do it again?

I think I agree with Stinny, I’m sure its because you want an orderly pile and don’t want to bend over to get them later.
My only question is, does that wick up water from the ground?

Seems to me that it will absorb ground water, but only the ends touching. That was my reason for the teepee- there are no splits laying flat on the grass soaking up wetness along their length. And (in my mind) they look better than a thrown pile. Gotta agree with billb3:
