Didn't want to hijack Marvin thread on his NC30 Englander but a few posts mentioned temps on the stove. I know most of the thermometers sold are for stoves and to be placed on top of the stove. But do any of you guys with inserts use thermometers? If so where do you put them? I can fit one on top but would be hard to read so I put mine on front just above the door in the upper right corner. Not sure I get accurate temps there.
I use one of the cheap laser thermometers to read stove top temp on my insert. The stove sticks out from the fireplace about 8-10”. I measure as far back as I can towards the center on top of the stove. I used to have a magnetic “wound spring” type thermometer on the top of the stove, but the kinds kept touching/playing with it and it would get out of calibration very easily. After a few of those becoming non-functional, I bought the digital laser one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ReelFaster, there are several Woodstock IS users that have a setup where they use thermacouples to view 4 different temperatures. BDF is one I remember because I have met him and he posted many graphs in IS THREAD. Many Woodstock users use a cat probe (it has a port for it) to get CAT temps. This is perhaps the best for an insert. They are also very good for any stove as you can then take the temperature from anywhere on the stove. They also tend to be much more accurate. You can usually get one for around $30 and the batteries last a long time. Many will have some fun and take temperatures of various things in the summer time. Interesting getting a reading off sidewalks, decks, roofs or even getting the temperature of your wife!
So many, many responses. So many, many responses I cannot use..... this is the part where Andrea says 'Leave it. LEAVE IT!' Maybe I can ask a question though Dennis..... where, exactly, do you take Judy's temperature? Like right in the..... kitchen? Brian
Lopi 1750i here working on burn season 6 right now. I’ve got a Rutland spring thermometer from TSC and it’s been in the same place since we installed the stove. It’s right there at the front of the stove top. As you see the bypass control stops just before it. My hand stretched is 9” thumb to pinky tip so I’d say the whole top sticks 11” or so from the surround/brick face. I have always watched it to run the controls and have had good luck. I’ve also got to say that I’ve brought one of the fancy laser thermo guns home and that cheap little magnetic has been dead on!! Another note is that the chimney I sweep once a year and get less than a 1/2 cup of very fine dust. To me that says I’m burning pretty well. I’ll have to find the other thread about running the insert and link it over here. I had a bunch of temps listed in it.
Hey, you are the one who threw out the bait..... Now I will always think of Judy as having a laser dot on her.... right in the kitchen. Reminds me of the time my oldest son said that my young son hurt him. Andrea asked him where he was hurt and the kid says "right in the feelings!". Too funny. Brian
Thanks Fellas, I don't have much room on top at all, my insert is pretty far back into the FB, sticks out maybe 3 or 4 inches, however it does have a lip. What temps do you usually try to cruise at? Going by my thermometer where I have it placed I usually cruise anywhere from 450 - 550 but mostly closer to 450 - 500 and from what I can recall it don't seem to stay there that long, slowly starts dropping maybe after 1hr - 3hrs can't really recall. Am also not dealing with all truly dry wood, alot of it is probably a little higher than 20% moisture, but trying to mix it with it with the dry stuff. Backwoods Savage I actually have an infrared thermometer and it worked great last night. When taking a temp where is a good place to get a reading? I was having a blast shooting everything, especially into the FB in the center of some hot burning coals and splits.
Here’s a little excerpt from a pm I had with another member with a similar stove who was wondering about frequent 700+ Degree temps... Yep I’ve got the 1750 insert here. I have the bypass rod that is on the top of the stove and pulls out to the front for open flue and all the way in for bypass through the firebox. Not sure how it’s set up on your Revere, but when my handle is all the way out to the front the thermometer almost touches the rod. The thermometer I’ve got is one of the Rutland magnetic ones from tractor supply. I have seen 700 here a time or two and it’s usually when I reload the stove for the night and accidentally fall asleep with full open air and a closed bypass. Hahaha That said this time of year for shoulder season I usually burn chunks and cut offs then will get into small 4 split fires and then jamb the box full when it’s serious cold time. I bet it’s possible to see those temps your getting even on shoulder wood! Best thing to do is find the sweet spot for your air control. I know for 500 range extended burns I almost have the air closed fully to hold it there. If I don’t it will go to atomic melt down! I think the best thing is just watch the temp as it’s rising and stop and hold it with the air control. I’ve noticed the air control has a full throw of maybe 3”-4”? Fully closed they seem to still allow a little through and it seems also that they go to full open within the first 1 1/2” and the rest of the pull is just show. At 700+ Though you start warping internal parts and start seeing little sparks popping off the stove. Not sure if that helps, but let me know what you come up with and I’d be happy to try and help any way I could. Just a thought..... I brought home a laser temp gun from work just out of curiosity to see how accurate that little thermometer was. It was dead on! Might not be a bad idea to somehow confirm your thermometer is the same as well.
Another pm excerpt...... This was a cold start this morning.I’d say we are set up the same for the most part. This is what I put in and started it with one of those little ez light squares. The piece on the ash tray is just showing you the kind of stuff that I’m burning in the fire box. I got it started with the door cracked open a few minutes then shut the door. Air all the way open and bypass open also she ran to around 500 and stayed until it burned down. I light that around 7am and right now at noon it’s burned to glowing coals. How tall is your chimney? Wonder if that makes a difference?
Ok last one and I’ll shut up!!! This probly answers your question best...... I usually go open bypass, open air to 300-350 then close thebypass and go to near 500-550. Once it’s there I close the air almost all the way and it will cruiseright at that temp for a long time with just thedancing secondary burn flames. If I leave the aireven half way out it runs away. I just went over to the stove to look at where I run the air. There is a grout line where the handle iswhen I have it cruising. It’s only about 5/8- 3/4” open from the full closed position! Anymore andshe gets hot!
I have another magnetic thermometer On my stove ,On top Just over the door And It runs about the same According to that one 500-550 range. The difference between that temperature There And the temperature In the center top of My free standing stove is about 110 degrees. Oh, The pictures are not showing up in your other post
