I check CL frequently for free wood, but don't have much luck, usually junk, want free work, or to far to drive. Had one good spot last year, but nothing since.

I'm wondering if anybody has had any luck with posting CL adds for wood cutting, grove clearing, dropping easy trees (not at risk of falling on anything, electrical wires ect.)?

    Thanks

Nick says CL is a thing of the past. FB marketplace has listings around here daily for free wood (already cut down) and some tree removals for the free wood. Also for posting ads to get tree work or selling firewood. Heck, even selling items on marketplace. Plus, it’s all local! Could CL infact be dying out??? ~Lissa

I have noticed a drastic drop off on CL scores these days. I'm not on Facespace anymore, so I cant compare.

We had good luck selling items on FB Market Place this year. Some things were sold in just a few minutes

i like FB marketplace. you can see who you are dealing with compared to CL. i posted a MC on CL a while back and in less than a 1/2 hour had 5 or 6 scammer requests and only 1 legit email.

I've never been on the Craig list, I get my wood by word of mouth mostly.

And don't forget the trimmers, wood just lays there for the taking. NH is most forested state in the nation, over the last fifteen yrs. ice storms raised havoc. We had massive power outages as all kinds of trees came down on the wires, pulling poles down across roads everywhere. The state ended up mandating by law, that the electric companies cut every tree and every branch within 15 ft. of the wires. Asplundh is everywhere in the state cutting, many, many crews. I just drive different ways where ever I go, and there are logs just waiting for me. Life is good!:stack:

That’s one of the benefits of marketplace, definitely. You can ‘see’ who’s on the other end. It makes it feel much safer than CL, perhaps that contributes to more people going that route now days ~Lissa

I always use FB Marketplace, and have had good luck using LetGo (another for sale site). In fact, on Saturday I picked up (from LetGo) 2 loads of 22"silver maple rounds 11 miles away. After I hand split, it totaled just shy of a cord

But we have to be quick don't we? Every else is doing the same thing. That's what I meant earlier, when I mentioned word of mouth. Guys come to work telling where there is wood laying there. Cha ching!

Yes I also use CL and have the free stuff section saved in my bookmarks bar. I check it when home from work, but where I live in the most dense area of NJ there is very little people getting rid of wood from tree cuttings. I have had some scores, but most stuff offered is in the more rural areas that are at least a 45 min drive for me. I can only take so much wood with my ford flex and trailer crate addition on back so its just not worth the time and gas for what I can carry. If I lived out further north west NJ it seems CL would be having me busy 24-7. Like everyone is suggesting here, everyone tells me about Fakebook, but I refuse to get an account so thats out for me. I will say that I am one creative wood scrounger though and I have no issues finding wood within 15 to 20 min from my house and one day I will share some tips in a new thread called finding wood in the urban landscape. I'm not talking always scoring cut to length logs, but often fallen limbs and logs left from power company trimmings, etc,etc..but like NH mountain man says sometimes you gotta be quick. Many times you have to plan your attack and yes be a little ballsy when working in populated areas. I know people upstate NY who drool over the quantity and quality of wood I am able to fill my small yard with. I even joke and call my back yard Oregon. One time I was in Colorado and met a guy in a bar from Oregon so I had to ask him the big question haha. Showing him a picture on my phone I asked him "tell me does my backyard really look like Oregon?" He laughed and said "to tell you the truth that looks like many back yards in Oregon" By the way I never placed an ad looking for wood, but have seen some ads like that on CL.

If your yard in Jersey looks like Colorado, you're doing something right. But we won't really know until you post those pics, will we? :rofl: :ithappened:

Wow, tough crowd here, cant even trust a fellow wood hoarders word.  Seriously, I'm working on getting the pics up. I firmly believe in the fun of sharing photos and love posts where people show the visual proof...maybe over Thanksgiving break I will figure it out.

If your really scrounging why not use both. I get TONs of hits on CL still and plenty
I get TONs of hits on CL all the time in my particular area. I also see plenty on FB Marketplace as well. If your truly scrounging use both!!! I don't go on FB at all except for the Marketplace simply because I just don't like it! Younger generation is using more of the FB Marketplace simply because its all tied in. Marketplace is the trendy new way to go and getting more traction but I still get scores on CL often and frequent that twice as much. I find most people post on both!

Had to go to the tractor shop for oil this morning. When I pulled in i saw a pick-up with ABC tree service on the side. Got my oil and waited outside for the guy to come out. He was carrying 2 saws so I started out talking saws. One thing led to another and he said he hated hauling good wood to the mulch factory. Could I use some?  We exchanged business cards and I can only hope for the best
