Any knot enthusiast? http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/ianknot.htm Small learning curve, but once you get it, its pretty swift. I figure for the year I save about 13 seconds, I like free upgrades/improvements.
I wear shoes or boots I don't have to tie. It hurts my back more to do that rather than picking up a large round. Gary
I only wear boots/shoes on the weekends. I hate socks and tying otherwise. Reason this knot only saves me 13 seconds/year.
That's got to be a pain to untie a square knot vs a normal shoe lace knot (whatever the name is)? I know a few times I've nearly messed my pants trying to get my boots off so I could go to the bathroom (and yes messing my pants would have been better than walking on the floor with dirty boots on!)
Not really once you start doing it regularly. The reason I started doing it is when climbing over bolts on a pole its a pain if your loop gets hung up. I always double knotted mine antway so it takes less time to tie and untie.
I don't go far without steel toe boots on. I own probably 6 or 7 different pairs of steel toe boots... and yes... I have a Sunday pair. Some years back I nearly lost my big toe from it being crushed (just had regular boots). I had to relearn how to walk without using my big toe much (can't feel it) Since then they have saved me several times!
I had been tying my "square knot" all wrong, and actually tying what is known as a "theif's knot." The thief's knot would come undone very frequent, even with a double knot. I now use a surgeon's knot, then an Ian Knot, and most day ill double it up. I even started using a variation of "Ians knot" on grocery bags. Desk job = not much need for steel toe's through the week.
I always called that knot (the bunny ear part) the disappearing trick handcuff knot. When my son was in cub scouts I taught his den to tie it. I would get them to put their hands in the loops and pull it tight, (with an additional overhand on top it could be a pretty effective pair of cuffs). Then I would let them get their hands out, then pull on the tails and the knot disappears and you have a kid with a look of amazement on his face. I never thought to use it tying shoes.
