image.jpg Answered a Craigslist ad for some wood piled up in a driveway- not complaining, it’s cut and free! It’s mainly some soft maple, with a couple of oak branches. It was wet from rain, a few pieces were a little punky but it’ll all dry out and burn fine! I have a pretty sunset as I’m unloading.

It filled an 8 foot truck bed, just over the bed rails. I said thank you very much and headed on my merry way!

Myself, I haven't been able to get any scrounging done. Not because of the back, mind you, thats been feeling good-but only due to the fact that I'm not scrounging, no?

Its been so wet from all the rain I figure that another couple days and the wood will be floating out......

Soft maple should be good. May even be able to burn that this winter. If it is turning punky in spots the rest should be dry.

See, we learn something every day! I hadn’t thought of it that way- and yes, the guy that posted it said it had been down for a year. He had covered it with a tarp....that had as many holes as Swiss cheese. Based on mainly 8 inch pieces with an inch, 1.5 inch of pinky wood and the fairly light weight, I think you’re right Backwoods Savage. As long as getting some wind and sun exposure can dry out the wet pieces...

For sure if we drop a soft maple but don't buck it up, by the next fall it will show signs of turning punky but still good. Two years is a different story. And one of the things I really like about soft maple is that it will dry super fast.
